I noticed that Northern Ireland is going to be the last UK region to scrap analogue broadcasting (2012). Is this because of proximity to the ROI and the problems analogue spill-over from the ROI would cause to new broadcasts on the newly freed frequencies in NI ?

    Yes.

We are supposed to turn off Analogue then too. Digital was supposed to start in 1999. The current trial is not part of any solid plan for commencing DTT here..

Perhaps we will only get RTE from Cable or Sky subscription after 2012 :)

For those in the South East, you can see exactly how you will be affected by switchover on the OFCOM website at:

    http://www.ofcom.org.uk/tv/ifi/tech/transmaps/

I'm not sure of the HIGH POWERS the digital transmitters will end up using, but I don't think they will be as high as those in Ireland.

The ERPs of the transmitters, with a few exceptions, are scheduled to be at 7db down from the analogue equivalent, or 1/5 the power.

That means for example Preseli, the ERP's will be 20kW per multiplex, while Crystal Palace will be able to transmit with up to 200kW ERP.

That.of course, means they will replicate the analogue outdoor antenna receivability, for an omnidirectional Tx pattern, per the Chester agreement...
