We have a "stainless" steel splash back behind our gas hob, it has developed rust-like marks on it, is there any way to clean these? Baby oil has been suggested and it is good for removing fingerprints but it doesn't help with the rust stains.

Try cleaning it with "Peek" metal polish first then baby oil. Available from most hardwares.

If you have access to a cash and carry, look for 3M stainless steel cleaner. Rust can be a bitch to get off. If it just a regular stain then the 3M might be able to help.
