I just downloaded Picas 2.5 from Google as was recommended it at a training course I attended recently.

However - I asked it to scan just my documents and it has defo done that. How do I get it that so that it shows only the folders I want and not every single folder under the planet?

Another question I have is I have a main folder for an event and a couple of sub folders underneath for various tasks and yet it is showing every one so so it means clicking on each folder to see what it is. How do I have it so that the view is mimicked like Explorer??

    Thanks

    Mike

    I use :-
    Folder >> Hide

    option

Basically all hidden folders , go underneath accessable folders.

Thanks mate, will try that in a bit

I tried that option and all it does it hide the folder elsewhere.

Why doesnt it mimic the explorer layout as thats what I want to see??

    Why not just use explorer?

    Why not just use explorer?

Explorer gets pretty unwieldly when you have ~4k raw photos and 1k jpg photos spread across two hard drives to keep in order.

Picasa is a great program for rapidly going through and sorting a lot of photos (although I think the new Lightroom beta tops it). About its only downfall is that it doesn't have a custom "Open with..." option.

I think Fenster explains it pretty clearly. I havent been shooting very long but I have **** loads of pics and I want to make it as easy as possible to get access but also to view what pics I have. Explorer doesnt allow you see RAW for example. Having the likes of Picasa or Lightroom helps tons.

I agree with you. I don't like applications that abstract the GUI from the filetree. Stuff like maintaining a library just creates extra work thats not needed in my opinion. I prefer explorer or thumbsplus, XnView. Keep it as simple as possible.

I don't understand that. Once your folders are well named I don't see the problem. Mine are either organised by date

    20061017
    20061018 Morning
    20061018 Evening

    Or by project and date

AMC Ltd\20060901 - Point of Display
    AMC Ltd\20061018 - Board meeting
    AMC Ltd\20061018 - HR Photos

I've many hundreds of GB's of data organised in this way. I generally only use the browser apps to batch rename files.

I suppose the beauty of using the likes of Picasa or Lightroom is the ability to have lots of features within the one application.

Thanks for the RAW Explorer link too - very handy having that

I've an old version of PaintShopPro and Photoshop which I use for that kinda stuff.

Sorry, maybe a bit off topic, but do people generally keep the folders created automatically.

I use Canon, so for instance I name a download folder say Dublin Oct 06 and then have the DCIM sub-folder and various sub-folders created automatically under that. I find it unwieldy though. Do people generally rename or delete these?

    T.

I don't have a canon myself, but with the camera we have I don't use wizards or the supplied software, I simply use Explorer to copy the files were I want them.

There are plenty of programs out there that you can use to pull the individual files off of the memory card, and put them into folders and flexibly rename the files according to data in the EXIF header. I have used a program called cam2pc for years, which does all this and is a pretty good viewer too, and it works quite well. Unfortunately it appears to have been all but abandoned by it's author, so I'd question the wisdom of paying for the full version at this point in time, but there's also a free version that does most of what you want.

    http://www.nabocorp.com/cam2pc/

WRT Picasa, I like the general look and feel of the program, if only they'd get rid of this "searching and sorting by date" paradigm, and just let me specify exactly which directories to look at. It's probably a great program for the terminally disorganised, but if you have all your photo's nice and hierarchically organised anyway, it's a bit of a nuisance IMHO.

I'd say the same about a lot of these media library apps.

    Hi,

I may be stating th obvious but ... did you try -

    Tools
    Folder Manager

then simply tell it which folders you want it to scan, which you want it to keep an eye on and which you want it to ignore ?

Yeah I did that too but it still doesnt get away from wanting the look to be the same as I have used elsewhere. Thanks for the tip anyway.
