Unable to connect to websites

I have just developed a problem on my home PC where I cant access almost every site I try except a few secure https sites from my bookmarks e.g. www.billpay.ie can be accessed, but hardly any other ones. On Firefox message is 'Connection was reset'. With IE no sites can be connected. Bizarrely email and skype both work fine. I have tried system restore with no joy. If it couldnt connect to any site it would make more sense.

    Anyone any ideas please. HELP!!!

    Hi Pansy,

If you cannot connect to basic http web sites then there could be a firewall issue.
http traffic travels on port number 80.
https is another port and so is POP email (21,110) IIRC.

I suggest you turn off your firewall (assumimg you have one) for a little while and try to go to google.ie or some other well known sites.

Failing that it could be some spyware/malware so please scan the pc for the same.

If you have any problems or don't understand any of the above pls let me know.

    Regards and good luck,

Thanks for suggestion. I will try when I get home.
I ran AVG, spybot and adaware and all found nothing.

OK. I think the Firewall is probably the issue. Or you could also check if there is anything in the Proxy connection settings in IE or Firefox. But first check the firewall.

    Best of luck

Have you tried pinging those address from your command line? For eg in windows enter CMD into the RUN box from the START menu and try

    ping www.google.com

If it fails and you've ruled out viruses etc then it could be an error in the DNS settings.

As GoneShootin mentioned, try and ping an address like www.google.ie

If that doesn't work then try surfing to this address

http://64.233.183.147 (which is google.ie) and let us know if it works.

This will tell us if it's a DNS or a firewall problem but it does sound more like firewall if https is working fine.

Different apps use different posrts so when 80 is closed, no more http but email and skype should be just fine, though a firewall that blocks http traffic yet nothing else seems strange to me :)

Many thanks all for your suggestions.
My stupid Kerio firewall had declared UDI.
I have brought it back under my own control and all is well again.
