Question re BBLS

Okay, well really two questions. I'm aware of past threads on the course, but neither answered these questions. I'm a leaving cert student, and I'm considering BBLS for the number 1 spot on my CAO.

First of all, I don't do any business subjects in school, but the business area really interests me and I think the jobs might suit me way off in the future, would I find myself at a disadvantage not having the business subjects at those aspects of the course?

And 2, in the prospectus, it said that some huge number of BBLS students took languages during the year, but the website says that BBLS isn't open to horizons being a joint major, how does that work?

I didnt do any business subjects in school either. Of course it would help if you had done but I suppose it doesnt matter at this stage. They treat you as if all the material is brand new so there is no problem learning it from scratch.

Dont know anything about this horizons malarky as im in final year and we dont do any of this major minor crap. Sorry!

Well most people will have done either economics or accounting to leaving cert but to be honest it doesn't leave you at that much of a disadvantage its certainly no reason not to do the course.

In second year there are language courses which do not go towards your degree which you can take if you wish. Also there is the possibility of going to France, Germany, Belgium and some other european countries for a year.

To be honest, BBLS is not a difficult course. If you can get 420 points you'd be well able for it, its merely a case of applying yourself and then its a walk in the park.

    P.S. - do it!

I too would say definitely do it..the first 2 years are a good laugh and having just gone into final year there are a wide range of subject choices so you can specialise in areas of law you like.

There are a wide range of business subjects covered which should help give you an idea of what you want to do in the future!

Again not sure how the horizons works...

    I recommend ya do it!

Surely the points for BBLS were higher than 420?

He means the academic ability for BBLS in terms of points.

Generally, there's a rule of thumb that you go up ~100 points from your mocks to your LC, so 420 in the mocks or before would be a good indicator of what you'll get.

That's only if you do some work though.

do it! best decision i ever made was to put it on my cao as number one! u meet really cool people, lectures can be really interesting and the social life is generally very good!

Well, alot of what Font just said is subjective.

Peronsally I enjoy the course (I do the same modules more or less in commerce) but I tend to socialise outside of the school*.

The point I want to make though, is even if you dont end up loving the ppl you study with there is nothing like UCD for meeting ppl you will like either through clubs, societies, the union or campus parites.

You think the course suits you, and thats the most important reason to do it.

*I have no grudges against a songle person in my class. They all say hello and are friendly and Id go to a class party, but I find them a little monotonous - and I prefer house parties to night club events.

I'm also in 4BBLS and would fully recommend it. Like The Van said, it's not too tough and there's a great mix of people from what I can make out in all the years. And there's Paul Mc Dermott as a lecturer...Enough said.
