Forearms

    Gentlemen,

I'm trying to figure out there much point in me doing specific excercises for my forearms. As I understand they would already be getting some attention through many bicep exercises and for exercises where there is a lot of grip involved (e.g. romanian deadlifts). I have a new instructor for my gym at work and I'm thinking of asking him to see if he can fit some forearm exercises in for me. Unfortunately he won't be in again till next week so I just thought I'd look into it first.

Also - how stressful can these be on the wrists? They've been feeling a bit strained of late (insert joke here)

    Thanks

I'm not one, but I'm going to answer anyway.

Your forearms will get a good workout from any heavy pulling movement- deadlifts (virtually all variations) especially so there's really no need to isolate the forearms to work them specifically. Thick-bar training will help no end, I haven't used it myself (thick forearms aren't on my Christmas wish-list) but I know a few who've had great results with it. t-ha does it quite a lot- pm him or maybe he'll see this any throw in a word or 17.

I use heavy grippers but probably do get enough work from other exercises. Shrugs really work them, the wrists usually give way before the traps if not using straps.

    *snigger*

I have noticed that mine are building a lot just from grip. Nothing seems to bulk up my wrists though.

If you hold dumbells with a hammer grip and do biceps curls I believe it will work you forearms while you are doing curls.

Reverse curls with an EZ bar will work your forearms nicely! The above suggestions will also work them.

I would say things like thick bar training, plate pinches and general heavy pulls/rows will get you sorted.

I found wrist curls, reverse curls and the like to do nothing for me but have seen a definate improvement in my grip and forearm size (though they both still need work) with various deadlifts, rows and chins.
