i have been toying with this idea for a whole hour or two.. (lol) ..anyway just wondering if anyone has done it before.

i was thinking starting in New York to Washington to Chicago to Seattle/Portland then on the way back go from San Francisco back to the East Coast.. taking a day or two in each city.

I travelled a good bit by train in America while I was living there for the summer.

First year I went from San Diego to Vancouver via LA, San Fran, Sacramento, Portland & Seattle took me about a month in total. It was great way to see the west coast. Met some brilliant characters (the newly married couple offering me moon shine whiskey on a 14hr train ride from Sacramento to Portland) some of which i'm still in contact. This only cost me around $170 one way and allowed me to travel north as much as I wanted within a month.

I also travelled from Chicago to Washington direct. Chicago was amazing lots to do there but Washington was a bit boring not much to do bar seeing the obvious sites. Think this cost me around $130 which I thought was expensive

The only site you’ll need is Amtrak.com there is an interactive map where you can plot your routes and work out fairs. The major cities are linked but be warned some of the trains can take forever with little to do in-between stations but stare out the window

Just go for it. I’d definitely recommend travelling the west coast during the summer by train.

We went from New York to Washington by train, and later went from Washington to Atlanta...had our own little "cabin" for the overnight trip...really fantastic fun..would highly reccommend it...booked everything online on the Amtrak website.

Another vote for Amtrak, cheap and very comfortable (there is plenty of room) and if you want you can upgrade to a sleeper cabin.:)
