Am thinking of buying a Hisense 42" Plasma from Harvey Normans for €999.

Is it worth it? Its not HD but i don't think that HD is essential.

Is Plasma on the way out?

Well do you need a 42inch TV? if you look about on the web you'll find a good 32+ LCD for that price or just a little over it.

I may be wrong but Plasma was only about because LCD couldn't go as big as plasma, now LCD can so there aren't as many Plasma TV's these days.

Wrong. Plasma is going out now as its much easier to make money on LCDs these days. Plasma is still the best in terms of picture.
    Heres a little guide.
    http://www.practical-home-theater-guide.com/plasma-vs-lcd-TV.html

LCDs just can't do blacks and that counts for a lot.

Things have moved on and LCD's are now perfectly capable of doing " blacks " just as good as most plasmas , LCDS also dont have the burn in issue and are not so particular about having to be vertical all the time !!

The latest Panasonics , Samsungs , and Sharps all have blacks easily able to match Plasmas , so theres not much to choose between the two formats anymore except on price ,

If I was buying a TV which will probably be doing me for the next 5 -7 years I would definitely get a HD ready job , HD is only " not essential " till you actually see it , then its absolutely essential !! :D
I would say over the next year and a half or so HD will skyrocket and content will be everywhere , then you are going to wish you had a HD ready TV.

I would agree with that from the LCD's I've seen recently. Though pic quality is quite poor on the cheapo LCD's like Beko and its ilk, the Panny's and Samsungs etc are well improved.

I have both a Pioneer 43" plasma in my main tv room and a Jvc 32" LCD in the bedroom.

Both are excellent but if I had to pick one it would be the Pioneer, the main reason for this is the viewing angle is much wider, if you are looking at an LCD from an angle it can be a woeful picture!! I find the LCD is perfect in the bedroom cos its on the wall at the end of the bed, so the viewing angle is not an issue. In the main room when I have people around watching the footie even on a very tight angle the picture is perfect!!

But this is just me, I would highly recommend viewing both in the flesh and remember to look at them at various angles!!

By the way if you look after your plasma you dont have to worry about screen burn!! Dont let anyone fool ya!!

Took me ages to actually go and buy one but I finally did. You just have to research what you want and then decide. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Personally, I always found that plasma had the better picture. That's just from what I could see in demos side by side. Although anyone in the business recommended the LCD's and that wasn't people selling to me.

The thing to remember is that changing the settings can make all the difference. CRT's are great in masking issues with the quality of your signal but they also mask good signals and connections too. So that's an issue with whatever tv you get. Just be aware of it.

Whatever you get you'll be happy with and where at first it does look imposing in your room, you do quickly get used to it. In the end I went with the Samsung 40", just happened to be the best deal I could get.

thanks guys 4 comments, very helpful. I think i'll go for the Plasma.

I know it may not be HD but ...

Anyway the Lcd's i've seen are dearer.

What kind of Spec should i get on the Plasma with regards to picture etc...
I must check the spec., but would like something to compare against. Eg. minimum should be .....etc......

With hd-dvd and blueray players coming out in the next 6 month I think getting something thats hd ready, 720p would really be worth a bit of extra investment, if you don't want to have to upgrade again in two years time. Unless maybe you don't see yourself watching too many movies and think you'll be happy with dvd for the future then non hd might be okay

Go in and see a demo is your only bet really. See what your plasma will do first hand. These tv's show up any descrepencies. So to get the best out of your tv you need to send in the best signal you can. Even with NTL digital and a progressive scan dvd player, the picture on mine where very good, I think can be better. An upscaler should improve it further and that needs the HD connection. True HD should improve it further.

First hand you should see what the plasma offers you and whether you're happy with it. If you don't like that, spend more and get better. If you don't want to spend more, wait another few months.

Branner69 your Pioneer is recent model and great model at that though, isnt it the xde? is the JVC technically as good on papaer aswell tho.

Yup in any case go find out recent models (ONLINE!! a sales rep at least many ive overheard go yup its brand new....ya and theres little chips inside that stop it from burning...wtf are screens now a fire hazard!!) and see if you can go see em working?

Theres a huge change about to happen to TV and thats HD -new formats e.g. players and HD terrestrial, please dont buy and be sorry.

    Good luck
    Nick

I have the Pio 436XDE and its an incredible piece of kit, but you pay for it!! The best thing is the Media box so you dont have 7 or 8 cables running up the back of it!!

The JVC is the 32" DS6 as far I remember, may not be quite technically as good on paper as the pio but very few tvs are!!

For anyone buying an LCD/Plasma, you do four things imo. Check for reviews in magazines or on http://www.homecinemachoice.com/reviews/ then research on www.avforums.com and then go and see it in the flesh!! Then source the cheapest place to buy it remembering that internet sites WILL want the tv sent back to them if something goes wrong, this could cost up to €300 for a big heavy plasma so add that to your costs!!
