I want to erase my harddrive so it will run better.

I have software I want to keep though...

    Is this the best way

1 Save software, videos and music to dvd

    2 Delete hard drive

    3 Put back important stuff

Would this work what would be the best way to erase it...would I need software?

you will need some sort of bootable cd, like windows xp cd.

what you do it back up everything you want to keep (for software you'll need the installers of the said software).

restart your computer with your xp disc in
go into BIOS normally by hitting DEL or F2
make sure boot from cd is the first boot option
follow on screen instructions of the xp setup
you can erase the data of your hard drive this way and re-install xp.
