computer freezing

    Hi. I'm having a bitch of a problem with my PC, I'm hoping some of you guys might recognise the scenario...
    When I boot into XP, it allows me to get past the welcome screen onto the desktop, then it freezes after a few minutes and I have to reboot. The same thing will happen about 3 times, then it will boot normally and I can restart over and over again with no problems. It's kind of like it needs to warm up!
    Also, I recently discovered that a similar thing happens when I play Evil Genius (not sure about other games...). I am able to load the game and play for about 10 minutes and then it freezes unexpectedly. This error doesn't seem to be documented in the Vivendi knowledgebase, so I'm assuming it's specific to my machine.

    So, does this description click with anyone? I'm really hoping it's not a hardware issue because I hate playing the "unplug everything to see what still works" game.
    In the startup side of things, I've disabled anything I didn't recognise in msconfig, so I'm now down to a few essentials like AV software and wireless utilities for my mouse and keyboard. The fact that the game crashes 10 minutes in seems to indicate that it isn't specific to startup, anyway.
    I have a horrible feeling one of my RAM sticks is borked...

    Any suggestions??
