Any program out there that can do this?

I want an organiser for my music collection that can level the volume of all tracks and if possible that will level the bitrates of all tracks. I know the first one is possible but is there any way at all to do the second one?

Both itunes & Creative Mediasource (& others i'm sure) will level the volume of your music, but i'm not sure bout any prog that changes the bitrate.

I'm pretty sure Sony Acid Pro can do this. Got a couple of hundred € handy?, it won't let you trial it unfortunately!.:o

What's the name of that program they give away on the PC gamer demo disk every month.... Audacity!, that's it, maybe that can as well, it's freeware too, check it out.

from my understanding of bitrates on audio files, you won't be able to level the bitrates unless you level them to the lowest level bitrate file you have and that will just degrade the quality of your collection totally.

Transcoding lossy music formats is a waste of time.

I wouldn't adivse trying to do the latter at all. As said, with 'lossy' compression you've already lost a certain amount of waveform fidelity, so you'll waste disk space by transcoding it to a higher bitrate, whereas transcoding it lower you're just going to degrade everything in your music collection.

Thanks Unklerosco, I'll give it a try, see how it shapes up. Thanks to everyone else for all the advice.

yeah dbpower amp works well, only problem is its a 30day trial unless you look for " dbpoweramp 9.0 "

Also if you originally rip a mp3 @ 128kbit and try to increase it to 320k you will not hear any improvement at all in sound quality. All you will get is the file size will grow about 50-60%.
