Are you sure that seems rather odd to m, to close so early anyone can confirm, it means I have to cancel plans if it's not open till 4???????????????????????????????????/////

I have a receipt from the Sports centre in front of me. It's open 10-2 on Sundays with the gym open slightly shorter hours.

why odd? It's sunday ffs. during summer it wasn't open on sunday at all.

    Nope

Why would the library hours have anything to do with the gym? Library hours chance in different terms, They tend to have less open hours then the gym.

I don't understand this culture of somethings not opening on sundays and some things opening on saturdays

give it a while passport, the penny will finally drop.

Its not the best gym anyway. I always thought a gym is the kind of facility that should the open 24hrs, i have yet to find one like that in Dublin.

a euro a visit, or a years Sub, so cheap enough. It's ok but can get packed, quality wise, it's no westwood or whatever, lockers are available and right in front of the desk.

And also there's a big classy one opening in Spring, in the new Sports Centre.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,186 ✭✭✭✭Sangre

Grand so, just want to start running/cycling/rowing again. Gotten very soft around the edges with exams :/

Do you have to pay to get shower access or is changing room in different area?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18 goldsmith

There's no charge to use the shower and changing rooms. If you have a phone, wallet, ipod you're best to put your stuff in a locker. I think the charge for a gym (the actual weights and exercise equipment area) visit has gone up to two euro but I could have imaginaed this increase in a dream. It's 65 for an subscription to the gym to around June I think which will include access to the new gym if/when opened.

Anybody know if the luce will remain open after the new place is built? Semms a pity to close it as it is already heavily used and I'd say the new place will also get overused too.

I don't know what the story is with the Luce equipment (i.e. whether the new centre will be entirely new equipment or a mix of transferred and bought stuff), but the building has (for many years) been earmarked for redevelopment as soon as the new centre is up and running. I've seen various versions of the drawings and plans (some but not all of the building will be a long-promised student centre; in fact the current Provost swore to it in order to get student votes for his election in 2001 - David McConnell still hammered him in the student referendum, though ;) ), but planning permission hasn't been applied for so the final list of occupants is far from complete. Bioresources is the main 'other use' (I think they already have some space, but there would be a good deal of redevelopment).

You're speaking of the new centre? Is this the same building as CRANN? http://www.crann.tcd.ie/index/AboutUs/Introduction

The basement will provide an environmentally controlled, vibration-free facility that will provide CRANN with an international edge in nanoscience research.

The first two floors above ground will house the Science Gallery, a unique forum for public discourse on science and technology and their role in Irish society.

The top three floors will form the heart of the nanoscience research centre and will house up to 10 world class research groups - up to 140 researchers.
From what I saw of the plans that used to be on the above website, there doesn't appear to be much room for gym/sports/pool etc. Where are they putting these?

There are actually 2 parts to the new building. Have a look at
    http://www.tcd.ie/Buildings/projectsnortheastcorner.php
for a bit more detail. The detailed architectural plans were on display in the Luce hall at one stage. Not sure if they are still there.

Student centre is planned to be in Luce Hall.

No, I was speaking of Luce Hall itself. Sorry for confusion! The new building(s) ('North East Corner' - that's both Crann and Sports - two buildings going up together and I think they are adjoining, too. But descriptions of the 'CRANN building' usually leave out the sports bit, as for all practical purposes they won't be run together.

Any idea whats happening to the squash courts? I looked at the plans and couldn't see any courts in the new building. So are they going to keep part of the old luce hall as sports facilities maybe the main hall and squash courts or redevelop the whole place as a student centre?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 450 ✭✭gymrabbit

The current plan is the squash courts will stay where they are. There are no plans for squash courts in the new complex.

probably a stupid question, but is distance on the treadmills in the gym measured in miles or kms by default? Im guessing its miles?

I thought you could change it? No idea about the default, haven't been to the gym in years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,311 ✭✭✭xebec

Definitely not miles afaik! Seems way too short for that!! Not sure it's kms either, but that seems more likely :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,365 ✭✭✭hunnymonster

the two closest the window are in miles the rest in km's (or the other way around).... sorry it's been a few months since I was in DU gym.
