Well the main fights went the way of what I predicted, well what the majority of the informed would have predicted. Some very accomplished displays.

Felt sorry for Franklin, I like him as a champ as I said before, but at the end of the day he was well beaten and will need to make some changes to his game if he wants that belt back, because Silva will still have it when Ace gets back to No 1 contender status.

Sherk and Florian was good. Happy to see Sherk when, the second I saw the blood I thought "dammit" because I thought it would be stopped. Well done to Florian for surviving to be honest, I don't really like him but he has some skills and deserves more respect for that I think.

Kongo annoyed me….i was hoping he would win and thought this would be a good test for his wrestling…but sadly he just was not up to par yet.

Lauzon and Fisher was fight of the night for me. That kid pushed a furious pace and sadly fell victim to that jumping knee of Fisher's. I originally thought it was a shoulder injury due to the way the blow landed but it turned out it was straight into the sternum!!! Ouch!!!!

    An acceptable event.

Happy to see Shamrock lose again, really he should have quit years ago - also Ed Herman was cut down to size big time, he's an annoying f-er, even though his opponent got lucky in my opinion

I have to say i enjoyed the two main events big time. even though it was clear the the sherk had florians game early on I still really enjoyed the five rounds, I was absolutely stunned that Franklin was demolished so easily by silvia, those knees to the mid section were devastating, talk about a Muay Thai instructional session,
sad to see Congo fail so easily, I am hoping he can improve and come back, those pesky wrestlers and their shoots !

I was convinced they would stop the Sherk/Florian fight after the cut mainly because it was only the second round. I was glad they didn't. I think it affected Sherk because it could have easily been stopped at any moment.

Florian really annoyed me, he almost stopped the fight due to a cut and he kept blatantly grabbing the fence. Then when Sherk was about to run across the ring with him over his shoulder he grabbed it again!

I was really impressed with Anderson Silva, that thai clinch was awesome. Then that knee actually moved Franklins nose to a different location on his face!

Yeah he got a lot of leeway with the fence grabbing I have to say. I also noticed him take a handful of Sherk's shorts on the refs blindside to try and work back up to his feet.

My favourite moment of the night was when Florians corner advised that God would show him the submission and Sherk's corner told him his cardio was great and to keep doing what he was doing. Great.

That said, really impressed with Florian. Cardio let him down a bit in the stand up, but when he got his wind he landed some nice shots. Nullified Sherk's topgame for 5 rounds, intelligent use of the fence. You're allowed warnings - so use them.

Felt that the fight was stood up quite readily in some instances, sherk was dropping elbows and it got stood up.

A little shocked at Franklin - seemed he hadn't heard of the Thai clinch. Could be good for the division, shake things up a bit.

Missed a lot of the other fights, I only get bravo after 12.30 (stupid half assed cable package??)

I hate Ed Herman, I hope he gets the clap.

    Shane.

a good fighter shoudn't need to break the rules to gain an advantage. He did a good job of defending but he was still quite battered at the end.

You really didn't miss much. I was bored.

Fischer Vs Lauzon was well worth a watch if it's on youtube or anything.

With regard to the whole "God will tell you what to do...." No offence to his corner, but regardless of someones religious beliefs you really need to use that 60 seconds between rounds to offer some good, analytical tactics based on how the fight has progressed to that point.

Besides, if God had any sense he had already bet on Sherk.

It's not breaking the rules to grab the fence, you are given a certain number of chances before the ref will penalise. It's part of the game, like weight cutting, you go as far as you can to get an advantage.

If the sport was "gentlemanly", then we would all fight at the weights we train at, and we wouldn't need a ref. If you're going to get slammed and you can lessen the umpact of it while not giving up any points, then grab the fence. It's not cheating, it's playing the game. People have a habit of seeing this as a "fight", it's not, it's a sport with rules and ways of winning that don't necessarily win a real fight (ref stoppage, tap out, doctor stoppage etc etc). I'm not crying out for blood or asking to take it back to the good old days or anything like that, I like MMA as it is but I see it as it is.

This will probably draw a sh**storm down on me, but this is a game and Florian played within the rules. Fair play, anything else is just head in the clouds idealism.

You get 12 penalty points before you're disqualified for driving but it's still 'against the rules' to go over the speed limit. Similarly grabbing the fence is illegal but you get warnings before any disciplinary action is taken.

I think that's going a bit too far. I wouldn't call it blind idealism in disliking when fighters hold the cage. In holding the cage Kenny Florian denied us watching Sherk put him over his shoulder and run across the octagon and slam him into the mat. I wanted to see that.

It just seems sneaky because some fighters don't do what Florian did. When Hughes did the same to Trigg, he didn't even consider grabbing the fence.

I talked with Sean last night during warm ups. He had no idea kenny was grabbing his shorts or fence he didn't care either. He trains hard and said he wasn't tired or tired the next day. We all knew Kenny was going to go for a cut with the elbow, Sean had prepared for that. I asked him about the cut he said it all depends on the location. If it had been down and to the right a bit they would have stopped the fight. I give Kenny more respect after seeing what he can endure.

Well if the man himself didn't care then I suppose I shouldn't be giving out. It still would have been nice to see that running slam!

I was crapping it that they would stop the fight, all that blood! two more rounds and the whole octagon would be painted red.

I thought the same thing after I saw the elbow and then the blood. I was really pissed when I thought Sean was going to lose because of a cut. It would have not been very fun training this week if he had lost.

That was not UFC 64 though...

I was a bit surprised to hear Rich saying he thought the clinch would be his sweet spot, didn't he watch tape of Anderson's thai clinch beforehand? It smacked of underestimation IMHO. Couldn't believe the way it went; not so much the result, just how quickly and decisively it all went down.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,448 ✭✭✭Roper

It was a nasty beatdown, but I think Rich's defences of his title have been against fairly poor opposition and he may have been expecting another easy night.

Y'know, I don't really rate Franklin? I always thought that once he came up against someone with definitive skill standing or wrestling he'd get beaten. I have to say I wasn't convinced Silva would be the one to do it, but I am glad he did as it shakes up the division a bit. All we need now is a serious challenger for Liddel and we're set for 4 exciting divisions.

I agree, the other divisions (well maybe not the welterweight threesome) all look very exciting and it looks like the belts might do some exchanging in 2007
