Insurance Groups question

Hi everyone. I have read the information in the FAQ sticky, but I'm hoping to get more specific information.

Basically, Im 26, Male (Dublin) and am about to buy a 250 sports style bike. At the moment, It's a toss up between a Yamaha FZR 250 or a Honda CBR 250. The thing is, I don't really understand how they are grouped. A mate said that the Honda would be a lot dearer to insure as it is 4 stroke??

Can anyone give me any advice on what type of bike is best, both driving and insurance wise. I have been driving scooters for about 6 years, so this is my first motorbike.

    Thanks.

Best thing you can do is call up the insurer and get them to quote for both..
There are only two insurers, so it wont take you too long..

The CBR would have a much larger following in this country, so in terms of parts, support etc., it's probably a better bet.. Had a CBR 250 for a couple of years, but haven't ridden the FZR..

    FZR250 group 4 with Aon
    CBR250 group 5 with Aon

Theyre both 4 stroke ;) As per what you mentioned about your mate saying 4 strokes would be more expensive to insure then 2's, I think its the other way around ;)

I'd prefer a cbr250 (mc19), or a cbr250rr (mc22). The rr has a slightly nicer riding position, and dual front disks up front, very nice - but I dont think they're cheap over here (due to them being learner legal more then anything else I'd say).

I'm not sure, but I think fzr250's are pretty rare too

The insurance groups are done on power to weight ratio. As above call up the insurers for a quote. Used to have a racing 250 and it was great fun but every boy racer will be trying it on with you.
