Severe Punishment For Mr Football

Ive just heard that Alan Matthews has been suspended until the end of the year and fined €5000 for his incident with the referee at the St Pats cup game 2 weeks ago. He supposedly pushed the ref, which is deemed as assault.

This must be the biggest ban ever handed out in Irish football, certainly to a manager.

Interesting to see where Longford go from here. They are a part time club, who AFAIK, only pay their players during the season, so they may cut their losses and sack him for gross misconduct, thereby avoiding paying compo?

2 versions of this, anyon who seen the tv interview will have noticed how spot on he was he apologised for his players thuggish behaviour (2 sent off) was generally not pissed off.

Seemingly as he was going to be interviewed he was talking to a player and walked into the ref , ref wrote assault in his report

Version 2 is he pushed the ref few Pats fans said that to me after the match in pub thought nothing off it meself as he was calm on tv....
