The graph of GDP versus broadband penetration looks even worse if you use the 2005 data.

But the contrarian in me has to point out that Greece is not the only other country that has "a massive difference between GDP and broadband penetration". Luxembourg also has a significant difference, with only an average broadband penetration, despite having over twice the GDP of the EU-15.

    Czechmate for Irish broadband
    Saturday October 14th 2006

IRELAND Has been overtaken in the the broadband ranks by new Euro entrant the Czech Republic, according to the latest Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) report.

As of June 2006, Ireland ranked 24th out of 30, compared with 23rd in December 2005.

In addition, no other country apart from Greece has such a massive difference between Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and broadband penetration.

While broadband connections have grown in 2006, Ireland is still the laggard of the EU-15 countries.

Consumer lobby group IrelandOffline yesterday slammed the Government's broadband policies and said its policies are ineffective in keeping Ireland competitive.

"The Government is wilfully ignoring valid recommendations from Forfás, the Oireachtas and the Information Society Commission," said Damien Mulley, chairman of the body.
