Just wondering any comments or stories anyone has heard about the popularity of the Wii?

i see it is being advertised in the game shops and the staff are pretty enfusiastic and are pushing it over a PS3.

And I heard two students (late teens) talking about it down the back of the 79 on the way home, saying they were definately getting one.

I personnally know of 4 other people buying at or near launch.

I'm trying to gauge how successfuly it will be in Ireland. My guess will be a sell out. With strong support from retailers.

For a start I sincerely hope it gets much more positive retail space from the game shops (and I do think that it will) unlike the Cube which was always shoved down the back.

I think that it will sell alot better than both the gamecube and the N64, mainly due to the innovative nature of the hardware. For now its bigest competitor is Xbox360 and I can see it giving Microsoft a run for their money this Christmas. i don't see either console totally wiping the other out in the pre-Christmas sales, but the Wii might get a slight upper hand due to the lower price tag. PS3 may be a problem, but I think that both nintendo and Microsoft should have a nice portion of the market won since Christmas and the PS3 could find it very hard going in the beginning. Of course, there's quite a large market of Sony fans out there, so it comes down to whether they want another console for Christmas and go with Wii/X360 and if they're willing to pay the high price tag for Sony's offering.

All in all, I think the Wii will be well received and hopefully should sell well, and lets hope more and more developers jump on the Wii wagon and exploit the innovation to it's true potential.

I think it will be very successful, I remember my dad playing Crash Bandicoot on The PS1 for hours :)

And with the Wii-mote and the user friendly ness of the Wii, I think a lot of casual gamers will end up buying one

I think it will be very popular BUT because Nintendo will supply enough consoles there won't be the same public perception of it being massive e.g. lets say a every shop gets 16 PS3s(number some US shops are getting) and 100 Wii(s) well the papers will be full of "Sony sells out new console in 5mins, severe shortages, OMIGOD people are going to die due to popularity of PS3" whereas a lot more people (but not everyone) will get a Wii so there won't be as much a fuss. This is one of the factors why no PS3 till March is good attention will all be on the Wii

On the matter, I was walking home from school and saw a big billboard advert for the DS, and a good one too. I mean, it's a known fact that Nintendo always crap up their advertising over here (what little of it they do) so seeing this nice cool bilboard poster was very surprising.

Maybe Nintendo have decided to ramp up the advertising for all their products before the release of the Wii. It's reasuring to say the least; reasuring that Nintendo have thought at least a little about the European market and do want to be successful here.

From spending too much time online I find myself expecting it to be a success like no other, but it's pertinant to remember that Internet climate is often completely different from 'IRL' climate. However getting out for christmas while Sony delays should help, and the Wii seems aimed to have a good appeal to the non-nerd crowd.

C'mon Nintendo! Get some of the genius from the old N64/ Gameboy tv ads going again!

A few of my mates seem very interested in the new console. If they get the word out, because people not in the "gaming loop" probs don't know very much about it at all. Fling a few ads onto prime time tv during the simpsons or something.

I can see retailers liking it because it has something no other product has and it's cheap enough that they can make a decent mark up on it which is why I can see them pushing it more than the other consoles.

Also I expect the cheaper games thing will disappear if it is the most powerful console as retailers decide that if you have a Wii, your going to buy games for it and they can charge more than they should.

In the above scenario, I'll probably buy most of my stuff online.

We'll see, you can't know until it's released but the graphics issue won't be a big deal. Most people I know couldn't tell the gamecube was more powerful than the PS2 when looking at it so that shouldn't hurt Nintendo too much. They've got the right features to do it, it's up to Nintendo to find a way to muck it up.

I've had a Seag Mega Drive, Playstation 1 and a PS2. I don't think I'll be getting a PS3. For one reason: price. It's just not worth it.

Thinking about getting a Wii. Maybe not straight away but I probably.

ya but the difference between wii and ps3/xbox360 is a lot more than the gamecube and ps2 had

I was passing through Kells earlier and I saw a huge poster advertising the DS. It's about time Nintendo starting really advertising over here, I'm sure that if they promote the Wii well enough the uniqueness will sell it.

am I the only person who always thinks the PS2 and the N64 were of the same console generation? I nearly always completly forget about the Game Cube.

anyway back on topic, I will more then likely get my hands on a Wii, but not straight away

the N64 was dead not long after the ps2 came out sure

You probably haven't played any N64 games lately. PS2 graphics far outclass it even comparing something like conkers to a first generation PS2 game.

I only bought my own N64 recently and the rose tinted spectacles were off fairly quickly.

I've got two pre-ordered! One for me, one for my brother (b'day/xmas pressie).
I fully believe it'll take the number one spot within six/eight months of release and the word "videogame" will once again become synomonous with Nintendo.

Yeah I'm a fanboy, yeah I have 8 Nintendo consoles including a Virtual Boy, yeah I've been excited about Wii and yeah I've spread the word like I was working for them.....BUT I didn't think I'd come across so many people who said things like "oh yeah, I've seen that already, looks kinda good, I'd like to try that out for the craic, cheap enough too...."

It's just no fun being a Ninty fanboy anymore....it's like being a Chelsea fan after Abramavoic (?) bought the club and all the new players...not the underdog anymore!

I don't know about that. I think it'll storm them back to success but they won't be on top like Sony were with PS2.

Just too many fanboys that will buy PS3 no matter what. Like they said, they could release it with no games and it'd still sell. Sad thing is that they probably would have sold the launch number of units without any games IMO.

I have a GC and DS. I'll get Wii most likely but I'm tempted by 360 for all it's graphical goodness. I hate console controllers though for FPS so thats why I'm thinking of just getting a Wii and letting my Pc go out of date (it's a laptop anyway so I've no choice but to buy a new one).
