ok, this might be a stupid question but it just occured to me...
my better half doesnt have a car. i do.
to put him on my insurance will up it considerably.
can he get his own insurance to drive my car?
or do you have to be the owner of the car to get an insurance policy on it?

My wife has car with her own policy and I'm a named driver at no extra charge. This has been the situation for the last three years. She has had 2 different insurers in that time - Eagle Star and AXA.

yes, but are you 26 (male), and on a provisional licence? unfortunately (for this) my better half is.

Are you living together? If so they might not charge anything extra anyway. When I moved in with my girlfriend and put her on the insurance my quote went down €200. Having expermented with the quote if I wanted to put anyone else on, be they male, female, young, old, provisional or full, it would cost me the same amount of money.

Didn't cost me anything to add my GF (20) on a provo license onto my policy, this is with Quinn

-Edit- She can't even drive actually, yet she can legally jump into my car and yipee off she goes! Good oul Ireland! (Only added her cause it didnt bring up the policy for her to technically free insurance and she's building a named driver experience)

Often, adding women has very little effect on your policy, regardless of her age/licence type.

Adding men usually has the effect of doubling a woman's policy, unless he's fourty.

To answer your question catho, yes he can get his own insurance on your car, but he can only get Third-Party Only. This means if he crashes your car and is at fault, your car is gone :)

My friend just got his provisional licence and got insured as a named driver on his girlfriend's car for free. I must check who they're with. I think there is a restriction that he can only drive the car if she's in it though.

He can be added as a named driver on her policy but very few insurance companies will insure him on his own policy on a car that is not registered in his name. One of the first questions alot of insurance companies ask you is "are you the registered owner of the vehicle?"

Anyway if the price for adding him on as a named driver on the OP's policy is that expensive then it ain't going to be any cheaper with his own policy.

Try Eaglestar lady policy, v specialised policy for a "lady" as the main driver.
