Maybe theres a thread on this already, anyway, I can't find it if there is.

Why do people think these two excellent radio stations haven't arrived on satellite yet. All my Radio is listened to through the telly for convenience, unless in the car. If the SKy Gnome becomes available here that too will have an impact..I think they are missing a trick...

I guess the answer is cost, if they went europewide they'd need to pay
eurowide copyright fees, if they went for encryption to restrict transmission to Irish Subs, that would cost them too. I am surprised Newstalk hasn't appeared on Irish DTT though.

Because there is no Irish DTT. Only a trial of a very strange nature.

I think the stupid Sky EPG actually costs more than the transponder space if you run 128k mono. Not many people listen to radio via satellite in Ireland. More likely they don't want to spend 200K to 500k p.a. on marginal increase of revenue / listeners.

    Ummm
    1) Astra 2D is not Europewide
    2) How do other stations manage it
    3) What "copyright fees" would Newstalk have to pay ?

Indeed it does (Ask Radio Caroline) Stupid it may be but its probably a necessary evil especially given the crap software in FTA boxes (well any ive seen) and the way many channels arent properly flagged

OK, I'm surprised Newstalk isn't on the "trail of a very stange nature" which is transmitting DTT from Ireland.

    1) Ok, It covers a much greater area than Ireland, which is the area these stations are copyright material licensed to cover.
    2) They pay for it.
    3) Newstalk use strings, beds, Commercials with V/O's and now play the odd tune or two.

Today fm is streamed on the web to a worldwide audience, So what’s the difference between this and broadcasting on Astra/Sky as regards to copyrights.

Well, I can't see too many radio stations will to cough up to have their channel listed on a DTT trial that is only available in Dublin and the East.

It would be possible/likely when the DTT system gets off the ground and goes nationwide.
