Just wondering what exactly silicon oil is for besides lubing airsoft guns, and what kind of shops you would be likely to find it in.

well, the back of my bottle says

*cutting tables, laying up tables, sewing tops, cutting knives where fusing occurs-anywhere sticking or fusing is a problem*

i'd say quite a few places supply it by the sounds of things. have you tried it at all yet? it did wonders for my rifle. especially the bolt pull

notice much of a difference in your guns after oiling them?

think ill give my rifle a clean down now actually..its strangely enjoyable. in a kind of David Koresh "i'm stockpiling weapons for the end of humanity" way*

*i'm not actually stockpiling weapons for the end of humanity. do not take seriously

I did notice it kinda stains the plastic was worried for a few minutes when my m3 had some unwanted streaks on it but its all good now ;)
i havnt realy noticed a huge difference but i havnt fired em since just 1 r 2 dry fires.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 960 ✭✭✭Harekin

You should put about 200 rounds through it after you oil the hop...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 747 ✭✭✭EyesOnly

i used it on my bros m4a1, the hopup must have been dry or something its fine now.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 960 ✭✭✭Harekin

The hop-up shouldnt be fine right after you spray silicone oil on it. It should be crappy for about 200 shots cos its overlubed.

it made mine very weird. on a low hop up setting, the bbs would roll down and out of the barrel if i tilted the gun at a downward angle. very worrying. its stopped now though *phew*. also it made the mag release button stick in a bit. also fixed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 747 ✭✭✭EyesOnly

i left it for 3-4mins before shooting it (its only a (metal)clone m4a1 from gunners). it fires straighter now was dropping about 10meters now its about 25-30

interesting stuff. so by "oiling the hop do ye mean shoving a oiled cleaning rod down the barrel till it touches something [the hop up im assuming]?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,602 ✭✭✭✭o1s1n

well, i put a spray of oil into where the mag goes. the hop up is just over that

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 960 ✭✭✭Harekin

No by oiling the hop I mean putting it fully off and spraying roughly a seconds worth of spray into it...because its lubed it cant give the necessary backspin consistantly and thus gives an inconsistant effect. You should clean and oil barrel...and just oil hop and mag slot every now and again. More often than not tho.

    awrite thanks.

Not sure what 2 think now. ive read that "Petrollium distilate" could melt hop-up rubber and after reading the back of my silicon oil it says it contains this stuff. Ive already used it and tested it on rubber and plastic before putting it on my expensive guns and it had no illeffects, But now im confuzzled

ah! ive never heard that before. must check my silicone to see what it contains.

    scary stuff

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,518 ✭✭✭[--SC(+)PE--]

scary indeed. I only read that "petrollium distilate' thing once so maybe it aint that bad

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 747 ✭✭✭EyesOnly

hmm mine has no info on the can at all :/, i got mine from fire-support so it should be ok. "crosses fingers"

If your in need of the good stuff, airsoft developed, go to the airsoft ireland forums and go to http://www.airsoftireland.com/forums/index.php?act=SF&s=&f=88 just ask for them to post the stuff out, im sure they will be more than happy. you may need to post a cheque or use paypal but you can get proper silicone spray/oil/grease developed for airsofting.

Petrollium distilate? Would that be the leaded or unleaded kind. It is just another name for the stuff your car runs on.... Petrol. Must be there to thin out the silicon oil itself as it can be used as a solvent. I doubt that the quantities of it in the oil would cause a major problem with rubber (unless you are leaving your gun in a bath of it overnight) so I don't think it is anything to worry about.

hmm hope your right. I was sure i messed up my Vsr by putting it on the hop. I fired 200 or so shots to clean it off but i was getting horrendous inaccuracy problems since lubed it. I cleaned the hopup with a swab and god their was alot of black grease still on it. It seems to be working well know [havnt fully tested due to were i live] but the viscious right turns the BB's were taking or gone thank god.Ill be slow to ever lube a hop again

So Scope where did you actualy end up getting the oil?

You HAVE to lube a hop every 6000 rounds or so and they take about 200 rounds to get "better" again. If its taking viscious rights its not the hop-up's fault unless to are tilting the gun...hop gives backspin not "right-spin".

ended up getting in in some motorshop across from the omniplex.

The gun only started acting up after it was lubed. I took it apart yesterday and well its hard to explain the problem without pics but ill try.
Basically to be able 2 slide the barrel and hopup chamber out i had 2 file down an inner dent which was in the inside of the outer barrel [caused by the previous owner screwing on the sight rail] Theirs four holes 4 the sight rail and the furthest 1 forward is directly above this dent. Eventually i got the hop up out, but screwing/unscrewing the outer barrel onto/off the spring and cylinder part of the gun is now a hard task due 2 the required filing. And now after re-assembling the gun their are 2 screws which cant be tightened [1 of em at the front of the hopup chamber and the other 2 screw the outer barrel into the back of the gun[cylinder area] so ill see what i can do bout the screws 2morrow when i get time.

I know what your saying about the hopup not spinning the BB right Harekin but due to the looseness it might be slightly alligned left or something like that [ive read about countless similar issues on airsoftretreat and arnies and other sites and am only going by whats been advised and done by them [not having the experience myself ofcourse]

well, you could always try buying a new vsr hopup to see if thats the problem. i wouldn't imagine them being very expensive at all

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,518 ✭✭✭[--SC(+)PE--]

I Did have an unsuccesful look around considering i probably will have 2 get 1 in the end . Best i saw was $60 delivered for a precision barrel and hop chamber [couldnt find the damn thing at a good price on its own] O ya that barrel was from Ehobby of course ;)

€60 for a tightbore AND a hopup? thats really really good. start putting your ghillie suit together!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,518 ✭✭✭[--SC(+)PE--]

long way of with the ghillie tbh :( .Ill tell ya more both the rifle when i give it a better inspection 2marra . The new barrel probably aint brilliant its not one of those prometheus 6.03's and all that its a marui 1 and doesnt say how tight it is [just better than stock thats all] But sure its the hopup il probably need anyway.

well i suppose at this point fixing the gun is the main concern. upgrades can be another day :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,518 ✭✭✭[--SC(+)PE--]

indeed.Though itl probably be a forced upgrade

A new hop-up is £10. Go onto ASI and check out Predator Combat Games: Retail Section.

Would they be universal hopup's are is their a specific vsr 1? I know its just a bit of rubber but still :o

Just a reply to your question on silicone oils. They are hughly used in the printing industry and you can get a very good spray can from a company called Ultrachem. Silicone reduces friction, and provides free sliding non stick surfaces, (or so it says on the tin). Im not sure how much it costs but it cant be that dear.
