Engine problem, advice needed!

first of all the car is a 1995 Subaru Impreza 1.6 with a little over 80,000 miles on the clock.
Recently the engine started to make a serious rattle in lower gears especially starting off from stand-still. it doesnt seem to be happening in the higher gears for some reason.
I had a look under the car and under the bonnet but i cant see anything obvious that could be making this sound.
earlier in the week i hit a pot-hole on the road, not at a serious speed but it still felt hard enough...has this anything to do with it?
Any help is much appreciated...should i take it to a garage asap to avoid any serious damage?
    Thanks.

You sure its not a gearbox problem, any gear oil leaking?
Dont think the pot hole is an issue unless its a suspension problem that you can only hear at low speed, will be expensive to be honest with you if its the gearbox.
