DS Opera Browser first impressions

    I'm impressed!

The functionality is pretty good compared to other handhelds/PDAs etc and it has some nice features specific to it like single/multi-screen views. The overview/page zoom mode is smashin!

The only thing I didn't think was great but which is inherent in all PDAs I suppose is filling out forms on web pages. You click on the form and a virtual keyboard/character recognition page comes up and when you have your input laid out, you send it to the form, going back to your page.

The speed seems faster than 3G but not as fast as true wireless broadband (I have an eircom wireless router and my usual transfer speed is 54mbps).

Found it quite cool being able to send a text from it last night on my o2.ie account! :D

Yeah but I don't see the point of most of these things. I can wait the 5 minute till I get to work or use the home connection.

Does it do englidh character recognition in addition to Japanese ?
BTW, where did you get it ?

Got it in Gamestop in Carlow (I was only passing through! - Honest! :D )
...and yeah, it's the english version so english handwriting recognition is the default.

Looks nifty, two version one for lite only and one for DS, different shaped RAM carts, can't see myself buying it though, never in a WiFi enviroment so whats the point?
How does it cope with plugins? With online banking, that sort of stuff?

Sounds good. I travel a bit with work, so it's a nice alternative to pulling out the laptop and booting it to check my mail.

Didn't know it was released here yet (?).

    How much it cost?

    It's 36.99 on cdwow.ie

Same as any DS game... €45. Cheaper if you shop around online.

I've ordered this meself, I'll share my thoughts once I get it.

Yea, was afraid of that. Bit too pricey for a browser I'm afraid. Particularly seen as I'd more than likely have to be at home -- where my wireless connection is, and also my PC and Laptop -- in order to use it.

    Would be nice though.

Afaik this browser *doesn't* support flash in any form, so keep that in mind if purchasing!

Yeah good for gmail and IRC and the like I supposed. Other than that not much use.

Would be incredible if it supported flash properly and you could use youtube with it on the go. Of course wireless isn't widespread enough here for it either.

Bought it today in Blanchardstown HMV
Bloody idiot assistant put in the DS LITE ram cartridge instead of the regular one, so now we can't try it till I go to HMV in Liffey Valley and hope they dont give me the "you will have to bring it back to our Blanchardstown shop" line
(I dont have to accecpt that right? I have reciept bag etc)

I did something similar once -- bought something in one HMV, exchanged it in another -- and they had no problem with it at all.

Although I was just swapping one unopened DVD for another (I think the actual film I wanted wasn't in the first shop or something), not looking for a replacement for faulty goods. So, eh, 'maybe' :)

I'd say they'd be allright with it though.
