Another tragic reminder of the risks that motor racing drivers face everytime they hit the track.

New Zealander driver Mark Porter, 31, has passed away this Sunday after two days in intensive care following a crash with David Clark in the first day of activity for the Australian V8 Supercar series race at Bathurst last Friday.

Porter’s Holden Commodore spun and was struck on the driver’s side by Clark’s Ford Falcon. Clark, a 28-year-old Aussie, regained consciousness yesterday and is now breathing unaided. He has suffered a punctured right lung and has fractures to his pelvis, right arm and leg, and remains in intensive care.

The Bathurst 1000 weekend paid homage to Australian racing legend Peter Brock, who at age 61 was killed in a rallying accident last month.

It was a very nasty accident for both drivers. (video is on youtube if you want to see it) Great to hear Clark is loooking good as it could have easily been 2 drivers losing thier lives.

    RIP

I was watching the race on Ten and was quite shocked when I saw it. The impact reminded me very much of Kieth Odurs death back in 94(?). It should also be noted that this occured in the Development Series support race and not the Bathurst 1000 itself, which was a cracker for those who haven't seen it yet :)

EDIT: I've looked at the YouTube videos all of which only contain the crash itself and the aftermath which don't really give you any insight into what caused it. During the Ten broadcast, they showed some replays of Mark Porters car which showed smoke eminating from Mark's right front. I thought it was just a rubbing guard, but it was obviously dropping fluid as the car that was directly behind was getting very sideways. I can only speculate that Mark lost it on his own oil. This oil probably made it difficult for oncoming cars, who were totally unsighted, to take evasive reaction. The end result was a horrific impact. Moments before the fatal impact, Mark could be seen putting his hands around his head as he knew he was very vulnerable in that section of the track.

    Adam.
