    hi.
sorry if this is the wrong forum so feel free to move it.

i have heard talk of an emerging broadcasting standard called dvb-h.
if my understanding is correct, dvb-h is akin to dvb-t except it's for handheld units, right?

does anyone know when dvb-h is likely to be rolled out in ireland. are we talking about over the next year or two
or should i not hold my breath?

i heard that 3 were looking into it. anyone know anything about this?

also, anyone with a list of currently available handsets with the dvb-h technology in them. i heard one phone called the lg u900 has it.

    any info much appreciated.
    thanks.

    Hi,

I suspect your question belongs in the 'Mobiles & PDAs' forum - there's a short thread on it here, which I see you've also posted to here:

Nokia N92 I think. I'm sure thats what I got the demo on.

There are also USB dongles for PDAs/Laptops. It is sufficently good for up to 10" LCD TV and larger if your viewing distance is greater.

Its actually better than some of the Sky shopping channels as they are actually running 1/4 screen resolution with lower bit rate :)

I thought the whole point of DTT was to save spectrum but if DVB-T broadcasts are going to be duplicated in DVB-H whats the point ?

Is there really any point to DVB-H?

Will people really watch TV on their mobile/PDA?

    BTW, valid point Ulsterman1690

You can even do heirarchical modulation of DVB-h on DVB-T signal. I think otherwise 1MHz can do 20 channels.

Trials everywhere have been VERY succesful. With people surprising operators by watching it in their own home.

Italy hasa confounded Mobile TV skeptics:

    From http://www.dvb.org/about_dvb/dvb_worldwide/italy/index.xml
Italys second commercial DVB-H service launched
Less than two years since the publication of the DVB-H standard by ETSI, mobile TV based on DVB-H is now a commercial reality with over 140,000 subscribers signed up in Italy since June.
Now a second commercial DVB-H service has been officially launched in Italy by TIM and Mediaset. This began service on the 9th September 2006.

    thanks for the replies lads.

anyone any idea what the pricing structure is likely to be? is it likely to be a certain amount every month for a given number of channels.
or will some channels be freely available similar to freeview in the uk?

btw i'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to this.
so is this more a "broadcast-based" technology like dvb-t or is it heavily reliant on 3g bandwidth?

also, in your opinions what will this mean for the currently-available 3g mobile tv.

    thanks again.

No. ALL the solutions Phone operators looking at are broadcast based. Streaming is too ineffiecent use of bandwidth.

Current 3g Tv in Ireland is unicast streaming. It will be phased out when these are added to have more BW for calls and 3G Internet data.

I'd guess you pay x for y channels and none free. This is the model EVERYWHERE as the whole point is not TV but money for phone operators.

There are 5 competeing totally incompatible technologies each with own advantages and disadvantages. Apart from any N92 owners and DVB-h, all the systems require new phones. No phone works with more than one TV system either.

    thanks watty for that.
interesting way of putting it when you say the WHOLE POINT is money for operators.

yeah i suppose they don't give a sh1t about anything else except their bottom line.

but if there's a demand for this and there's enough competition in the market presumably prices will come down in time, shouldn't they.

also does dvb-h have to be inextricably linked to the greedy mobile phone companies. could maybe state broadcasters be involved etc.

Why would anyone other than phone operators want to do it?
In theory you can get a small portable DVB-t set.

But there isn't even DVB-t yet here. There is no move ANYWHERE to do DVB-H, DAB-TV, MediaFlo, Broadcast 3G or any other Mobile TV for anything other than phone operators, as DVB-t is fine for normal use and even possible on small 4" portable TV.
