Gerry Ryan show now!

Some dude on the Gerry Ryan show is putting the fear of god into parents around Ireland, warning against creatine and even protein shakes, saying there very bad for you etc, parents are ringing in and one said her son was taking progain and was worried about him getting a heart attack down along the line because of it and the Doctor on the show "Conor O'Brien" said she had a right to be concerned and also warned it had a good chance of leading her young son(17) into more serious drugs such as steroids etc - like wtf! They are scaring the bejasus out of everyone.
Personally i wouldn't have a problem letting my son take a protein supplement, although i wouldn't let him go on creatine. All in all though, there'll be a lot of arguements tonight

I take creatine - i just wouldn't let my "developing" teenage son take it, when his older then its his decision

Trilla, there has been endless, and i mean endless research done into creatine. I mean years worth, years and years. I myself have taken it on and off for six years now with no adverse effects whatsoever.

Don't get offended because you come on a forum, say "creatine is bad" and someone takes issue with it. Give your reasons, give some studies that show why it is bad, you'll stand a better chance that way.

I find it hard to believe that someone could have a massive adverse reactive to three amino acids, which is all creatine is. If this was the case they should be having similar but smaller scale reactions whenever they eat meat, which contains creatine.

just chose your words a little better, isnt that hard of a thing to do. No offence taken. Im not going to go on about this, I shouldnt have brought it up to begin with.I know people that take it that are fine, but I also know bad stories too. Gonna leave it there now...

Not to worry man, it's just that i get a little annoyed because there are a huge ammount of people who have never lifted a weight, taken a supplement or gone to pubmed.com who will sit there and put creatine ( which like i said, is just 3 amino acids - i wouldn't like to think about the difficulty of an adverse side effect to something like that so i hope your family member is doing okay ) in the same class as steroids.

I also hate when people like Dr Conor O Brien, who has a massive vested interest in the scene are given a soap box like the Gerry Ryan show to go off at parents about how "dangerous" it all is.

Rather infuriating to be honest. :(

i would like to hear this bad story if you dont mind please?
If its too personal then im sorry and dont but if you woudlnt mind it'd help me out a lot.
    Thanks

"because I can" I will pm you later or tommoro when I have the time. it would be a long one. But like Dragan said, I too know people who have been on it since they were 17 and theyre perfect as far as I know...

Listening to the Gerry Ryan Show is sad but believing some of the tripe he spews is even worse.

Bear in mind that he can chose the contributor who suits his point of view so really his stuff is one sided.

Now, I don't know Dragan but what he writes here and on the Test forums makes far more sense that the "expert" whom he had on telling the world that the 17 year old will not be able to lift his kids when he is 35!

We are now being regaled with computer hacking stories which are going to frighten us into binning our computers.

Heck, any population who swallows Bertiegate should have no problem in being Gerry Ryan believers.

I was just talking to a friend of mine who is an industry insider. He has a vast knowledge about supplements, training, nutrition, the whole show. He rang up the Gerry Ryan show and was refused airtime….yet they will give "Mr Smith" time to come on and be concerned about what the good Dr. is telling them.

I can only assume they did not want another well educated person talking to the good Dr. , I know I wouldn't if I was trying to put a spin on things!!!!

Did he warn about red meat, chicken fillets and milk? Thats the real nasty stuff you want to watch out for, protein shakes are the gateway drug

Did the "doctor" mention anything about doses?

    Hi,

This is another site, that is very informative about Creatine, I know a lot of people dont trust Wiki

Im not surprised at all but im delighted to hear that.

anything from that show should be taken with a grain of salt. An awful lot of the scaremongering and myths related to supplements should be too. Whey is only milk extract!! Very danergous those cows. World domination is their only goal

I wonder would a complaint to the broadcasting complaints commision do any good. Probably a toothless joke of an organisation though. I doubt they'd have an interest in G.Ryan spreading hysteria or misinformation but would wet their knickers if someone said "C*nt" on the radio

Apparently he was agreeing with some one about the really high protein content of banana's.....so i assume his doctorate is not in nutrition anyway. :D

    :D cows are evil!!!

Seriously, has no-one heard of "curds and whey"?? That's the same whey that's the supplement is. Mind you, didn't do Little Miss Muffet much good, the wimp... ;)

Gerry Ryan is a useless, fat, ugly idiot anyway. Ironic that he should be on about anything fitness related. He should stick to what he excels at - sleazy chats with housewives about breastfeeding and their gynacological problems.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,235 ✭✭✭iregk

Well arguing about the pro's and con's of creatine could go on all night but there is one inescapable fact people. Creatine is most certainly on its way out and its being driven out. I'd say within the next couple of yours you will see the EU banning creatine. Now I'm not saying thats a good or a bad thing but thats the way its going.

If they did they'd have to ban read meat. It's full of creatine. In fact, they'd half to ban us. Half our our creatine stores get synthesised directly by our own livers, the rest usually comes from food.

Ridiculous really- not you iregk btw, just the notion of banning creatine!!!

Did the same my self - was ringing for ages but could not get through.

However, you are all taking swipes at Gerry and its wayyyyy off the mark as he is just there as interviewer and will agree with what ever anyone says. He real culprit was the interviewee Conor from the doping agency.

I listened to it fully and it did come across as totally one sided and parents will go home with the idea that protein drinks are evil and will lead to steroid use - which is the massive jump conor made e.g. i take wine gums so i will become an alcoholic!!!

His good points are that most take the short approach and do not work hard enough on optimal diet and basics of nutrition.

Guys _ i disagree with you. As far as I'm aware gerry is part of the production of the show so has and input into this. So he is too blame.
That show is never a forum for intelligent debate and this is just his latest example of sensationalism (did I spell that right?).

He should resign and get a job writing headlines for the Sun

BTW I'm not letting the good doctor off the hook either. He should be discipined for spreading such kak.

Someone should just make him aware of this very thread. He'd especially love this bit of scandal for his show:

Can you imagine his reaction if somebody read that back to him as a quote. :D

One of the most uneducated discussion's in the history of man i think.
Gerry Ryan is obscenely stupid. The Dr he had on is possibly more stupid even though i thought that would be impossible and still live.

How can anyone take anything from that show...

I was going to take a few points and go through them but whats the point.

Creatine will make you sick - it doesnt work - its a dangerous "drug". They - it - them. Complete BS.
"When everyone in ireland was on ecstasy".

what about the girl that came on asking about "something"? She didnt know what it was but it had to be bad. And the doctor agreed without even knowing what it was. Kent Brockman take a bow...

"stateusque muscles only from protein shakes" - "you look strong but your not" - "the science backs up there's no gain from protein" - "he'll get a heartattack from progain"

Oh my god, the stupidity is shocking

I have never had any time for Gerry Ryan and suggest there is little point in worrying about what he or his listeners believe. It is just a daily soap opera.

As for O'Brien, I have never rated him nor many of his opinions on training or injuries. Getting a few things right is not an excuse in my book for gross errors elsewhere. He consulted twice on an injury for me and I believe it was money utterly wasted.

Generally I will not take advice from young or middle aged people in what I consider very poor physical shape.

    JAK.

just listened to that part of the show today...thanks for the link guys.

That doctor was a fool. when the woman with the son strung out on progain rang in he said he didn't know maximuscle or progain....
come on if he'd done any research into the field at all...maximuscle would have jumped out at him...it's not like they don';t advertise.
