Very strange type of poker...

I was recently away and witnessed a very strange type of poker being played.
I had a go at it with out knowing much about it and just playing tight.
I won a bit of money but while playing it I was always trying to figure out how to play it correctly and as im not really that familiar with the math’s of 5 card draw I was hoping some one would be able to offer me a helping hand.
I promised one of the regulars of this game to give him some advice on beating this game as the people playing the game are really just gamblers with money and none of them would look at poker as a mathematical, strategically, thinking game.
    Now the game:

The game is essentially a 5 card draw but with a lot of twists.
First of all they don’t play the full deck and it’s a split deck.
For example if they have 5 players playing then they caught the deck from 6+ and play the 6> split of the deck so 2,3,4,5 will not be in the deck.

If they have 4 players playing then they will cut the deck at 7+ so there will be no 2,3,4,5,6 in the game.
The only ever play 5 handed max.

    Hand Ranking:
There are some difference in hand values there and I have no idea weather or not the split deck justifies this change in hand rankings.
    3 of a kind beats a straight.
    Flush beats a full house.
Also flush is not awarded to the highest card of your suite but its awarded to the suit it self.
For example if two ppl have flush and one of them is A high and the other is Q high the Q high could win if the suit is better than the A high.
    The suites are as follows:
    Spade
    Heart
    Diamond
    Club

The other twist in the game is that you can open with anything and you don’t have to have jack or better to open.

    This is basically it.
I tried to teach them holdem but they all thought it was a silly game and had no interest in it.
Does any one know how I maybe be able to get some mathematical odds and facts etc on the above game?

Thats the exact game I used to play when I was 8. Glad to see its still going.

Never heard of three-of-a-kind beats a straight though, but yeah, a flush beat a house, because there would be only 8 cards of each suit, and you had to get 5 of them.

We also had to have Jacks or better to open (and if nobody opened, everybody anted again and it was Queens or better to open ... and if nobody opened then it was Kings or better .... and then Aces and then Aces again then Kings and so on - with the pot growing ever bigger).

    Fuzz,
do you have any links to any information on this.
what im really looking for is firstly just basics such as the odds on you makinf flush when you have 4 ,the odds of you making 3 of a kind when you have a pair etc.
i know this can be easily done by some devision and stuff but im also looking for some strategy on how to best play this game ie what hands to plays early position ,mid position, late position, how to draw cards etc...

I can just imagine Cardshark at Iranian Immigration explaining why he is visiting the country "I'm just here to gamble with the fish that play cards with Gholi".

Like I said - I used to play it when I was 8.
There was no Inter-web and certainly we held no books on poker.

Its just draw poker - although the general quality of hands goes waaaaayy up.

I recall a friend of mine telling me that he played strip-deck holdem online recently - maybe there is strip deck 5-card draw also???

Tell your friend to tighten up and to bet aggressively when he has a good hand.

They were talking about this game on Poker Night Live at the weekend.
Maybe try the website, might be some useful stuff there about it, or on their forum.

There is a section on the forum where you can ask the presenters questions. I think it was either Mark Banin or Doctor Tom who was talking about it, maybe leave them a question and they might get back to you.

    Website is: http://www.pokernightlive.co.uk

this is what all the turks in my neck of the woods play, and for some very serious cash too, when they wander over to look at our pub holdem game they are completely baffled.

must be a middle east thing.

Nope not really. I played 5 card draw as a kid but no mad variations of it.
