    Hi all
Just wondering does anyone know if it is legal to buy home heating oil in the north and take it across to use in the south
I saw this morning that the petrol station now has a pump for home heating oil, they also have 5 gallon barrels of home heating oil for sale
I am thinking of either buying some as it is cheaper in the north
Not sure yet of prices, will find out at lunch

Could be a nice wee saving before xmas

As far as I know, it is illegal. The five gallon drums are for emergency use when you run out of oil. They keep you going for a few days until you get a delivery.

ahh the age old (illegal) art of smuggling
officially you are supposed to go to the customs man and tell him what you have bought and give him a big fat cheque for the duty on it..but carry on my friend a lot of border dwellers do it regularly

What duty is due on the fuel neacy? VAT is paid at source in the North, so what other duty is due, and at what rate? Is it because oil is on some restricted goods list that this additional duty is due?

Here's an old newspaper story about it. The last bit is interesting
