You probably should pick up a firewall also if you don't have one (might be one with your router. You don't need to spend a whole lot of money at all really. Some of the free ones should do the trick. They are listed under the Essential Free Software link or there is a list of recommended anti-virus scanners in the Security forum. My preference is Anti-Vir.

Neither. The free ones are much better. Norton is the worst virus you could ever put on a pc IMO. McAfee is ok but not as good as the free ones

    Get these:
    Anti virus: Avg free
    Firewall: Kerio
Spyware: Spybot search & Destroy, Windows Defender & Adaware
All are free & in the essential software guide at the top of the forum. Linky: http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=231147

Download them all & then disconnect your net connection, uninstall your old software & install new 1's.

Neither, thats being honest. Norton is the biggest pile o' shiet ever made, resource hog and McAffee is not much better and both are a days work to uninstall. :(

Use Avast , it doesnt hog system resources like Norton / Mcafee , and its free !! It regularly comes up in the top ten antivirus programs.

Hi guys thanks for that , so I have Norton on my laptop , I bought it last year and its due to expire in 8 days. So basically I can get all this stuff free and its better than renewing my Norton ???

Wish I knew that before. Will this AVG definatley stop all the stuff that Norton did over the last year???

I'm with AVG - with 7 days to go.

How does "free" work when your trial expires?

I say this naively because either they are unaware and there's a backdoor; tbh I don't want them to go to the wall and am willing to pay.

If there is a back-door it should be announced here... If they don't cop-on from the announcement they deserve the fate of the dinosaurs...

There is a good chance that it will do much better than Norton, let it expire and then chuck it.

There are two version of AVG, the free one and the commerical one, sounds like you got a trial verison of the commerical one.

Dellas, make sure you get the FREE AVG version from http://free.grisoft.com
NOT the TRIAL version that elivs... obviously got.

elivs..., download the above, uninstall the trial version and install the FREE one.

My vote also goes to the free AVG, been using it for over 3 years now, ne'er a sinner on my PC, and I surf everywhere!
I do have a paid-for firewall though, Agnitum Outpost Pro.

Whats the bets that Avg will find something that Norton missed. If you've used Norton for the last yr, chances are "it will".

AVG for virus scanning. It's free

Another thumbs up for Avast - been using it for almost 2 years now and it seems to catch all nasties, very easy to use & configure, will scan incoming and outgoing mails and insert "no virus" note if you wish, also warns if you are on dodgy websites .... the automatic updates are very handy too, more or less daily

NOD 32 if you have the money , well worth it ,updates a few times a day and uses very little memory

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,984 ✭✭✭✭Lump

Why is it good that it updates a few times a day?

Norton is crap, stay clear of it - I lost count of the number of PCs broke by it that I had to fix when I worked for Currys.

I second Avira Antivir, if you are willing to pay €20, you can get the Premium version which provides faster downloading of updates, anti-spyware, outgoing/inbound email scanning and a few other features.
