How do you hook (punch)

Just wondering how you throw a hook. Does your fist finish lower or higher than your elbow? Is your hand in the position like it's holding an ice cream or like it's putting a mars bar in your mouth (in other words are your knuckles facing the sky or away from you or another variation?)

Its alot more than hand positioning and I'm not sure if I can accurately describe it here.

    (left hook).

Given your orthodox I'll start from the feet up.

As with the right cross your torque will be coming from your hips, and to get your hips moving through the movement your going to pivot on the ball of your left foot, this should follow through the same plane as your hips.

As you said, your elbow will be slightly higher than your fist and your fist (agains as you descibed it) holding a mars bar to your mouth.

I like to bring my left hook door on the first two knuckles of my fist.

You should end up in a position whereby its natural to either duck from a combination from your partner, or deliver a strong ring cross as again your torque will naturally following through your hips rotating back again.

This is much easier to demostrate. I hope I've articulated it properly.

    Ice cream.

Left hook is the hardest punch to learn IMO. Step into your hooks.. Takes ALOT of practice before you feel it. When you get there, you know it feels right.

Work body hook and high hook on a heavy bag. You'll get it eventually. My friend went over this with me for a while. Takes practice man.

Thanks gerry that was helpful. A full contact karate coach told me palm towards you and a boxer (not a coach, or VERY experienced) told me the opposite way. I think the glove and handstrap facilitates the boxing style a little bit but bare knuckle boxing from the karate would encourage the karate style. Makes sense I suppose.

In terms of my personal preference, I think I throw the hook and my fist ends up as if I'm looking at my watch. I wonder if this dangerous, inefficent? Please look at attached image.

Have a look at the Seahaven Hillcrest ABC manual of boxing skills and techniques. This is possibly the best and clearest boxing instruction on the web. Hooks are covered in detail.

Thats another variation of the hook... I saw this called the "shovel hook" Tao of Jeet Kune Do by Bruce Lee. could come from the back hand....like an over hand right.....am I right in saying that???

Personally when gloved up I hook with thumb on top, verticle fist, and pinky on bottom. I personally prefer this way, and get much more power. some people told me this is wrong, but it works for me, and I 've rung a few peoples bells in sparring with it over the years.

In street, I probably would be using open hands. or as the Thais do in a street fight.....they surpass punching range, and straight in with the elbows.... I've seen it done out here. and of course they are experts with them slashing elbows. Never underestimate a Thai!

Hey for me and the way I was taught,
High hooks to the jaw- palm down, body hooks palm either towards or facing slightly upwards depending on the target.
