save old slanty jaws some money and get the Sigma 10-20, then he can spend the remainder on beer for you or something equally as nice :D

I went for the Canon. It's on its way from Hong Kong. It will be interesting to see if the Customs will fall for the "gift" thing. I doubt it somehow.

I purchased the same lens (Canon) from KEA PHOTO and I received it in three days via Fed Ex and customs never picked up on it
    Best of luck with it

The best of luck with it :D A friend got one recently and it is a fantastic lens.

Let us know if customs pick up on it, I am interested in trying Kea myself.

I'd put money on it at this stage that customs wont bother with it. But eh, not enough money to cover the customs duty if they do stop it :D

The only reason I ask is because I bought a fair bit (lenses and flash) from HK when I was buying my 10D a few years ago and it was all stopped even though they didn't charge me anywhere near the real value. I wonder does Kea stuff ever get picked up by the boys?

I cancelled my order with Komplett and ordered the 90mm Tamron macro lens from KEA last night.

Lets see if Fed Ex can really get it here in 3 days. Its certainly going to be faster than the 34 days +postage time I would have had to wait with Komplett!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,620 ✭✭✭Roen

All the four orders I've got from Hong Kong got here within 4 days, usually 3. Postage is usually around £stg38, depending on the weight, but well worth it considering what you're saving.
    You should have no problems.
    Best of luck.

I ordered a lens from Kea about 3 weeks ago. Postage cost £25 (stg) by regular post and it took just over 10 days to get to me. :( When I ordered the lens I could not find any FedEx option, this seems to have changed now though. Maybe there was just something up with the page when I ordered, dunno.
But anyway... it pissed me off at the time but still 10 days by regular post from HK aint bad really! But it cost enough - fedEx would not have been much more for 3 day delivery :(

ps: what i want from santa... ?? more teddies :P

Yeah to get back on topic, and if Santas reading this above in the Northpole, I wouldnt say no to a nice d200 and the nikon 18-200 lens. and a jetski.

however, i know Santas going to be on a more modest budget this year so I reckon I could make us of a nice 50mm f1.8.
Its not the easiest thing to be dropping hints about

Course it is... so this is what you do... you got someone playing santa in your house right (now i dont wanna hear about anyone dressing up in mrs claus outfits thanks, lets keep this clean) anyhoo... you got a pressie buying individual.. so you just get a whole load of camera magazines... circle the lens you want and start leaving them all around the house. She will very quickly get sick of all these magazines/papers cluttering up the place (cos she is a girl, this step is guaranteed), and well as long as you have left the right page open she will eventually figure out you might want this lens without you ever opening your mouth. Then, she will feel all clever like she came up with this idea all by herself, and expect you to be very proud of her 'knowing what you wanted' - so thats the point where you play along and tell her she is great. Quick cuddle and you get to play with your lens.

    QED.

I applaud your plan. I'll photocopy a few pics of the lens and stick it about the place, fridge/hairdrier/shoeholderthingy aught to do it.

How right you are, the kitchen table is a holy place, im not allowed leave anything there at all. Usually i cant anyway, as its covered in more important things like handbags/shopping bags etc:D

Just got a mail from one of the guys in KEA, he couldnt figure out why i had added 18 pounds to my order cost (it was for the Fed Ex) hopefully its not gone snail mail now!

If you need any help with a plan for hinting for those teddies, let me know!

Well, the lens is on it's way...it's in Paris as I write. How do I know? Well KEA provide you with the FedEx tracker link. See attached for the information on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

Yup.. Used to go from Hong Kong to Indonesia, to Paris to Shannon

now it just goes hong kong, paris, shannon.

Way too much time spend watching FedEx website :D

Wouldnt be too surprised if you had that in your hands tomorrow..

can i have a loan of that pic of your license?

    :)

Just out of interest especially as there are soooo many lenses to choose from, what will you use it for and why specifically go for that lens??

I want to have a good selection of lenses to cover any event but as I said there are so many to choose from.

It's arrived! Ordered last Sunday night, delivered to my door today Wednesday! And better again, no customs duties. Incredible service. Here's the first shot (my kitchen) straight out of the box. It's amazing what it can squeeze into the frame.

I think I'm going to have a lot of fun with this lens.

Mikeanywhere: you asked why I went for it - for the extreme wide-angle effect, which I like. The widest (in 35mm terms) that I've used to date is 28mm. At 10mm this lens gives a 35mm equivalent of 16mm. Now that's wide! Should be great for landscapes and large group shots.

Rymus made me get a Sigma 10-20 too. I was impressed that it came with a Lens Hood, and can't believe Canon don't ship Lens hoods with theirs either. so now I gots me a 350d, Battery Grip, 2 Batteries, 18-55 with Hood, 90-300 with Hood, Sigma 10-20 with Hood, and a Speedlite 420 Flash. All I have to do now is get it out of Auto Mode ;)

You should see the rest of the crap I have. Someday I'll realise money is for saving ... not spending (There's about 2 chances of that).

Photography is the new bug, but I was playing for a wedding on Sat night with the band, and there was another professional amateur for want of a better term photographing everyone on the dancefloor, and it actually got to the stage where people were getting annoyed with him, his partner included. There's a time and place I reckon, and some people go overboard. Not to thread-jack, but is there such a thing as too much photography? I was away with herself for a weekend abroad, and the amount of grief I got for shooting 5-6 shots of something to make sure it was right was unbeliveable, but understandable. She wanted a holiday, not to watch someone taking photos.

K not really photo forum stuff but just to follow on from this discussion... fairly spontaneous but,... ITS TEMPORARY. I WILL drive a Beetle again. Anyway.... when I was there today there was a lovely Racing Green Mini on the forecourt... took an old spin in that too. WAY over priced, not as nice to drive as the Beetle at all. See... at least Im open-minded

Probably a bit dodgy, but I bought my camera and first lens through ebay last April. I decided redently to get the 10-22mm lens (surf photography) so I searched ebay. No european deals :(
I emailed the guy I bought from he said he could get one so I sent the money. Prob a silly move as I don't have the safety net of ebay, but he was good the last time and I have his bank details :)

Didn't want to risk it from HK as I'm getting something from the states and will probably get caught for that anyway.

I paid €630 for the lens, how much did yours work out to be?

You got a good price. I paid a total of €595.69. Conns Cameras, Dublin are quoting €951 and Pixmania, €800.
