BigEegit, this explains what i'm going to do. The black protective cover can be seen on the chip, protecting the pins: http://forum.overclock3d.net/showthread.php?t=4735
Hope this clears it up for ya.

    Are you sure?

The picture in the above link shows the bottom of a e6700, count the pins .... none ... lots of pads but not a single pin

    http://fileshosts.com/intel/Asus/P5WDH_E6700/marks/photos/1.html
On the other hand, the picture shown in the second link is the socket on the motherboard, which has quite a few pins. This is the part that specifically needs a cover when the cpu is removed in case of idiots who dont know whats in their own computer stick their fingers in it (I'm looking at YOU Psycopat)

Your actually right, c2d don't have pins, but have pad's like you say, but i want to sand & polish the other side of the chip so i need to protect the pads. Its a common flaw to the new c2d that some have a slightly concave ihs. Read the link above in my last post.

Just to keep ye all up-to-date, got protective cover off person on another forum. Lapped my chip last nite & got 3' drop in temps. Used the following grade paper, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1200 & 1500. Got a nice shiny copper finish. Gave my zalman a rub also. I'm expectin another 1' when silver 5 cures in about a week.

man post some pics and stats. I wanted to see how it turned out and if there where any significant drops in temps?

Didn't take any pics m8, didn't feel like doing a guide as its pretty easy, only took about an hour & this guide covers it all perfectly: http://forum.overclock3d.net/showthread.php?t=4735

As for temps i now idle at 43'-45 with case fans turned down where i used to idle at 48-50' with fans half-way (measured on the die using core temp) & full load with orthos hits a max of 60-61', where it was hitting 63'-65' before. I've the zalman running full-on in the bios. These temps are all at 3.25Ghz (360x9) 1.47Vcore. I expect temps to drop even further when TIM cures. I'd like to change to Arctic freezer pro, but the zalman socket 775 bracket means i've gotta remove the mobo from the case to change which is alot of bother at the moment.

"Me needs watercoolin", but i change my mind & sell things too quickly. Just ordered a widescreen monitor & my next change is the mobo, so not gonna have cash for w/cing for a while.

Mx1 is supposed to be better. Don't have any personal experience with it. Don't think it justifies being double the price of silver 5 for the whole half a degree it gives. There is other collaboratory (i think thats what ya call it) stuff, supposed to be way better, it cant be used on aluminium tho as it reacts & it corodes copper over time. Highly toxic if ya get it on your skin. Supposed to be impossible to work with as its like mercury. Here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835121005

I thikn ill stick with artic 5 then, as i dont want to loose a few fingers or eye lid ( yes i got it there before )

And i sure as hell dont want to wake up with my cpu and part of my motherboard missing one day :(
