USB problem

On my desktop, when I plug anything into a USB port (directly in, not through a hub or anything) it only sometimes recognised it as a 2.0 device. Mostly it tells me that this device can perform at higher speeds. But then again, sometimes everything is ok.
Changing port doesn't do anything. I've reinstalled the drivers but it still persists. Any idea's on what could be happening

My guess would be corrupt chipset drivers.

In the few mobos I've installed USB2.0 has generally been something installed with chipset drivers, or as a specific extra "USB2.0 support" type thing in older ones.

Edit: then again, I've seen this happen infreqently on my laptop, though I believe that was as a result of not making use of the safety remove hardware feature.

I've tried the newest chipset drivers a few time, usually XP picks its own controller driver over the nforece2 one, but i've even forced it on and it still doesnt work.

I've tried formatting, no luck. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling in device manager multiple times. I've tried uninstalling and restarting with the devices in. Didn't work.

I thought it might me specific to certain devices, maybe a firmware problem, but it now happens with all my USB 2 devices. It seems it's happened to quite a few people after looking through google. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be much of a solution. It's a mystery. Another unsolvable windows problem.

If the ol' format and reinstall doesn't work it really sounds like the motherboard itself is banjaxed.

You should never attempt to install a USB2 driver under XP SP2 as that is a sure fire recipe to throw a spanner in the USB sub-system.

XP SP2 comes with it's own built in driver for the controllers, by the sounds of it maybe it could be a hardware issue but have you checked the contacts on the port in case of dirt or something could be messing with it.

If the ports for some reason are defective which would be unusual as the logic is in the south bridge where your IDE and lots of other I/O are located so if that was damaged the computer shouldn't even be working.

Not a solution but a quick fix is get a €20 PCI USB2 controller and use that instead, disable the onboard USB2 ports in the bios and do a clean install of XP + service pack 2.
