AVG, Anti-vir or avast! are all free ones (or have free editions) and will do much better than McAfee. Good luck removing it btw. :( List of recommendations here.

I got Free Norton for 3 months when I bought my PC.
After the free trail period I loaded Anti-Vir, a German freebie. It immediately found a load of viruses that Norton never did. After a year or two I started to have trouble getting updates from Anti-Vir, and switched to Avast! Working great and automatically looks for an update very time I switch on.
    Touch wood... No problems.

Well Nod 32 I think is the best
or Kaspersky all depends on what your doing online

    And theyre all free;)

    All Software/Games/Movies/Music is free;)

You dont realise how close you are
Im not talking torrent or p2p;)

But I wont post becuse admins/mods may not approve

If they dont well I will:)

Pansy did you remove Mcaffee before loading Avast. My Mcaffee has now run out and was thinking of downloading Avast as my antivirus programme, but worried about clashes with existing programme. What does anyone think?

It probably won't clash unless you are trying to run both at the same time (then you might have some speed issues) but it would be better to remove it I would imagine.

If you are using XP start using NOD32 it's free(30days) so you have to remove it al the time and download the Fresh one.

BUT if you are using VISTA RC1 only TREND Microcillin can be used because of problems with the UAD they haven't fixed this YET at ESET (nod32)

    VISTA = GREAT:p

Ive had avast for 3 years and i find it great. The software automatically updates its definition database. I does this in the background and then pops up a sign accompanied with a voice saying " your virus database has been updated "...it makes me laugh sometimes when im in the hall and hear it as i pass by.Its as if it waits till im nearby...:D

    Very happy and very cheap!

Just been checking out Avast antivirus, although it is listed as free, this appears to be only for 60 days, then it seems you have to buy for something like 40odd pounds.

Are you sure you downloaded the free edition located here? It says'
To use the Home Edition, you should register it, however, after initial installation you have 60 days to trial the product (as with all avast! antivirus products) before you must complete registration. The registration process is very easy, and will take you only a couple of minutes.

Good stuff....with RUU on this ..just try it for up to 60 days and then if you like then register it. Registration is painless, but you must re-register every 12 months.
