    Hey folks,

I can't find a previous thread about this

Is anyone else REALLY looking forward to seeing this? :)

I've been dying to see it for ages now, and I thought it wasn't gonna be out til next year, but I found out recently that it's out today :):):)

For those of you who haven't heard much about it, the cast:

    	Leonardo DiCaprio	.... Billy Costigan

    	Matt Damon	.... Colin Sullivan

    	Jack Nicholson	.... Frank Costello

    	Mark Wahlberg	.... Dignam

    	Martin Sheen	.... Oliver Queenan

    	Ray Winstone	.... Mr. French

    	Vera Farmiga	.... Madolyn

    	Anthony Anderson	.... Brown

    	Alec Baldwin	.... Ellerby

    	Kevin Corrigan	.... Cousin Sean

    Should be great!

The trailer is on imdb, and it looks brilliant:

    What ye think?

Newspaper reviews are giving it 4 and 5 stars and calling it Scorcese's best work since "Goodfellas". 94% rating on rottentomatos so, by many accounts, it's damn good. Be interesting to see if it's one of the few remakes that can equal the original (in this case, the excellent "Infernal Affairs").

I am going to see it this evening. Looking forward to it, it has an excellent cast and by all accounts it is suppose to be excellent (Empire 4 out of 5, BBC Film 4 out of 5, Rottentomatos 94% etc.) so hopefully it will be a good'un.

Plus from an Irish point of view it will be cool to see Jack Nicholson as the leader of an Irish mob in Boston :)

apparantly its not a remake per say - they took the initial concept of Infernal Affairs and went off on their own tangent

That's the best way to do it then... Glad to hear it. It worked very well for "Dawn of the Dead" re-imagining recently as well.

It must be some what recognisable as a remake from the scenes in it. I was in the cinema recently enough and saw a trailer for it and thought a lot of the scenes looked familiar and by the end of the trailer I knew that it simply had to be a remake of Infernal Affairs so its not like they went drastically off on a tangent if you can make the connection with a 30 second trailer.

Can't wait. As much as I love Infernal Affairs, I'm not a bit sceptical. I think it'll be rather good!

After feeling a bit let down after both Gangs of New York and The Aviator I really hope this is a cracker.

Id love to see a real return to form for Scorsese -

I thought that the trailer looked terrible! But all these high praises...

Maybe I'll go to see it after the initial hype is over. Maybe.

    Jesus man are you serious?

Gangs was brilliant, some of the best acting of recent times.

And aviator, oh man it blew me away. Leo's best ever film IMO

Yip the trailer looked corny rubbish.
Di Caprio is all wrong for the role ,not tough enough looking.

Yeah but I'm speaking relative to Scorsese's earlier work not general cinema...
he has set a fairly high bar and didnt quite hit it on those two movies...

Compared to Goodfellas, Raging Bull, even Casino or Taxi Driver or Mean Streets ( better when watched a second time, not as pointless as I first thought ) - I'm hoping The Departed is a return to these kind of heights - that special kind of Movie making hes capable of. Im going to see it tonight so ill report back!

Even his not so highly rated work such as Bringing out the dead and The last temptation of Christ had something about them i just found really appealing.

The Aviator was a little flat and Gangs just did not quite do it - despite Daniel Day Lewis's brilliance...

Isnt it 16? The Eye Cinema is listing it as 16's

I loved Infernal affairs, but I hate DiCaprio, hopefully Jack Nicholson will make up for Dicaprios ineptness, looking forward to it though which is strange to be looking forward to a Scorsese film these days.

    Id say Dundalk is incorrect

Its listed on the Irish censors site as 16's. Check out http://www.ifco.ie its on the home page

saw it tonight, really really enjoyed it, its great ! Surprisingly really really funny in some parts, great tension, suspense, good story and good ending.Acting is good, and having not seen infernal affairs, unpredictable, it felt genuine to me with good scenery around boston etc, I felt the cops and the baddies were all believable
    loved it !

Seen it, loved it, why can't they make more movies like this?

class movie, never seen internal affairs, but this was really good

DiCaprio was really good in his role, i think the whole movie was casted really well. very funny, Boston, the Irish, some really funny parts.

"Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe fúck yaself":D :D:D

Gotta love the people who say DiCaprio is wrong for the role?
You haven't even seen the movie yet but you somehow know that DiCaprio is cast wrong.....

Saw this on Saturday. Bloody excellent movie, DiCaprio is amazing in his role, wouldn't be suprised if he is at least nominated for an oscar. Nicholson is great too.....his scenes are amoung the best, and are usually the funniest also.
Ray Winstone is class as Mr French, as are all Costellos crew.....real hard bastards who come across as genuine gangster thugs, nothing cookie cutter about them in my opinion.
I saw and really like Infernal Affairs, but The Departed is better in my opinion. I wish I hadn't seen Infernal Affairs now, as I would have enjoyed The Departed even more if I hadn't known the plots twists.

    4.5/5

Absolutely brilliant, loads of great characters and scenes. Fantastic dialog too. I really liked Infernal Affairs but this is much much better.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭Hugh Hefner

I have a question. If I were to see The Departed would it give away/ruin things in Infernal Affairs? I would like to go see The Departed but I'd rather watch the film that inspired it first, especially since I've been planning to buy it for like a year now.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,397 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

    It would ruin the ending.

I liked The Departed but it probably would have been better if I didn't know the ending before hand. Both the Departed and Infernal Affairs had their good points so I'd say they are both as good as each other for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,776 ✭✭✭Noopti

Depends Heff, as I said above I would have preferred not to have seen Infernal Affairs before seeing The Departed, as I thought the latter was a better film and not knowing the plot twists would have made it an even better experience.

Id disagree. What about Infernal Affairs is better than Departed ? Only the original storyline in my opinion. The Departed is better in every other way I can think of. One thing I loved about it was the dialog, which was much better than in Infernal Affairs.

Infernal Affairs is an excellent movie. I loved it.
The only fault of The Departed is that its a remake.
I suspect whichever one you see first will make the bigger impression for most.

Also, Infernal affairs is a trilogy. The second one is class too, I've yet to watch the third.

    Do you speak Cantonese ?
Infernal Affairs was a groundbreaking film, without it,the Departed would never have been made so to say that the Departed is better in nearly every other way is a bit weird.
I though the score in Infernal Affairs was much better, the scenery, city backdrops were better and the pacing was better.
Each to his own I guess.

I thought the characters in Infernal Affairs were much more believable. The characters in The Departed were more like cartoon or comicbook characters apart from Matt Damons and Dicaprios characters. Jack Nicholson might as well have been wearing the Joker outfit with all the funny lines he came out with.

Hardly groundbreaking. Original, yes, but not ground breaking.
What difference does it make if if The Departed is based on a previous film? And how does that fact make it wierd for it to be better?

By your argument nothing can be improved upon. Ridiculous.

I wouldnt call it groundbreaking, it was very original though. I gave it credit for being original. Just because something is original doesnt automatically make it a better film. Remakes owe alot to the film they are based on but you can still judge them on their own merits..so I dont think its weird to say that it has improved in nearly every way. I dont speak Cantonese but I read the English subtitles fairly easily...

In relation to my above point... The Thing, The Fly & Dawn of the dead were as good or better than the films they were remaking, similiarly, Ring & The Grudge dont come close to their originals.

Yeah I agree. Wrote a little passage about that in the review board. Like Infernal Affairs more.

Have to say I was kind of irked by the ending.
Thought they spent too long building up how intelligent Costigan was supposed to be for him to go and die so stupidly at the end.
    .

Good movie all the same but that kind of irritated me.

    Im puzzled by ONE thing.
costigna gives the doc an envelope, surely there is something in there which lets the people know damon was crooked and or costignas events of the last year +

YET the envelope never gets shot again?

I saw this afternoon in eye cinema. it was the best movie so far this year - trumping little miss sunshine. It was very plot heavy. So heavy I felt sorry for the few smucks who mistakenly took a loo break and found themselves totally confused by missing just a few minutes of this movie!

It seemed very literary also. The script has many subtexts while the audience plays catch-up with the Boston dialect! (Strangley enough, I don't remember anyone on Cheers sounding like that apart from maybe the postman)

My advice before seeing this movie:
    1. Empty your bladder etc before you enter movie, as this is a 2.30hr movie and you will not want to miss anything that happens. :D

The crowning glory was narration at the beginning, setting the cynical mood, and the rat scurrying across the balcony at the end.

I did get the impression that Marty cut huge amounts out and unfortunately that may have caused some confusion over some elements of the plot - see spoilers above.

You must go and see this movie. Marty S. is the supreme director of the ambivalent "mob" story.

I must see this movie considering Monahagn (sp) is writing the script for Jurassic Park 4 which is right up my alley...

I'm sorry but that rat thing was just cheap, gimmicky, unsubtle and basically naff. Marred the ending.

Di Caprio, for the most part, I found pretty convincing. There was something very enjoyable about all the punch-ups in this film also. :)

I don't think the scoring etc really hit all the right notes in the way it could have.

    Very good film.

All of Costello's (Nicholson) crew right out their names, social security numbers, bank accounts, etc. and they are put in the envelope. Costello then gives the envelope to Sullivan (Damon). When Costigan (DiCaprio) sees the envelope, he realises that Sullivan could only have got this from Sullivan and that Sullivan is the mole.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 654 ✭✭✭DS

You've got your envelopes mixed up. After Costigan spotted the "Citizens" envelope and realised Sullivan was the rat, he went to the girl and gave her an envelope for her to open if something happens to him, or if he calls her and tells her to open it. There is clearly some kind of incriminating evidence in this envelope, yet it is never seen again in the film. It could have been used to craft a much more satisfying ending than simply seeing Wahlberg pop Sullivan for the 4th head shot in the space of 10 minutes.

I was thinking about that myself. I would guess that when the DVD comes out and you check the deleted scenes it may make more sense.

There was a similar kind of thing in Traffic.

I took it that the envelope contained enough evidence to incriminate Damon. It also probably said to deliver the information to Mark Wahlberg.

That is more or less what I was thinking how else would he know to do what he did? I reckon we will see it in the deleted scenes.

I don't think Wahlberg needed to know Damon was the rat to kill him. He may still hold him responsible for Sheen's death, Damon having given the order to put Sheen under surveillance.

I've worked this out. If we knew what she did with the envelope, the ending would be spolied.
