A friend of mine has changed the language from English to French on his Mac. I'm not sure of the details as I'm heading off to his place tonight to check it out. But he tells me that the finder now doesn't show anything, he can't open Sys Prefs to change the language back and various menu options don't work (possibly all menu options don't work).

I'm not asking for an answer as I'm not sure of the problems exactly - but would booting up from the install disk and changing the language settings from there work do you think? Also I'm hoping that I can repair permissions and do some basic disk checking stuff from there too.

Any other ideas or possible things to check on Google do you think?

I suspect he has done more than just change language settings let me know if you get grief.;)

If all else fails to an Archive & Install. Changing language settings is harmless, so I suspect he may have done "a bit more". ;)

I'm just back from it, 1.5 hours trying to sort that out! *phew*

Luckily there was a second computer for me to target disk mode or it would have been a pain. Due to the cd drive not working I couldn't boot up from the system disk (from an external firewire drive) strangely enough. That surprised me.

So I did a load of tests from Techtool pro and nothing made a difference. Then I sat back and thought: "why is the finder flashing on and off when it's in French mode?" And thought that maybe the French language wasn't actually installed - hence the finder was opening - looking for French - then closing again.

I grabbed the French installer from the install disks and installed via firewire onto the pesky computer - rebooted and VOILA! I'm guessing I couldn't open Sys Prefs is due to the fact that I didn't have a french sys prefs hence it couldn't open with no words/text?

Thanks for the comments, thankfully it was simply the language he changed! However, when I say he changed it - I mean - he removed ALL languages bar the French one! :)

Gordon, you can always do an Archive & Install. This will leave all data on your system untouched, including all your preferences, installed apps, etc. However, it will replace your system folder with a new system folder, and thus fix problems such as this.
