My wife was on the arrow commuter train from Dublin to Maynooth yesterday evening. When it stopped at Clonsilla at about 18:00 there was smoke coming from under the rear carriage and everybody had to alight. Someone told her that this is a fairly regular occurrence as the disc brakes overheat.

Has anyone here heard of this happening? Is it what Microsoft would call a "feature"?

That is what one would call an exaggeration.

    Do trains use disc brakes?

    Eh yeah they do!

And I would call it an exaggeration as well. The 29000 DMU's (the type your wife was on) are IE's most reliable Commuter train. A figure was quoted recent of their Miles Per Casualty and it was very impressive for a DMU.

What is meant is that when the disc brakes overheat smoke is emitted. I think this would go for the brakes on any vehicle i.e if the brakes are binding heat is built up.
Does anyone know if this happens regularly? I don't know how reliable these commuter trains are but they sure are noisy and crowded. Roll on electrification.
