    Hi,
I need to reinstall Windows XP on a dell pc - I have the original Windows XP installation disks which I used for another pc - but what I need to get is the Windows XP key from the Dell PC. Can anyone inform me how to get the XP key from the Dell system?

    All help is appreciated.

    Barty

    COA sticker on the case.

There should be a sticker on the case with the key. Or you could try ringing Dell. Layke option only works if you still have the XP installed on your machine.

What is the COA sticker - is it the Windows XP sticker that you get with the Windows XP installation cds - which you are meant to put on the tower? I have not seen the pc yet, but I thought that Dell batch load the OS on systems, and do not provide individual keys - is this incorrect?

Layke - I read about the magical jelly bean key finder, but again it was mentioned that is the system it a Dell system that it may not be able to get the key, due to the batch loading of the OS.

Thanks Hobbes - XP is still installed on the PC - does this mean the Keyfinder will work and will provide me with a legit key? I just want to format the HD and install XP again - probably put in some extra memory - the PC is about 5 years old but someone wants it just for internet access and a small bit of work.

    Correct.

It is incorrect. Dell are required by Microsoft's license agreement with them to supply genuine serial number stickers on the case of every machine they ship.

It will retrieve the correct CD key.
