I am soo pissed off this didnt come out as well as I wanted especially with the water reflection?? Maybe I am trying to be too much of a perfectionist!!

What do I need to do to get this right for next time??

    Cheers

    Mike

What specifically do you want to improve in the reflection and in the image in general ?

Was it a perfectly clear glass like water you were after? Was there much/any movement in the water when you took the photo? What was the shutter speed? I think theyre both good shots, it's unlikely given the conditions that you'd get that crystal clear reflection on the water.

    Backround info:

Early morning around 7am(ish) trying to get a nice sunrise pic with the boat but the clouds decided to stay so the pics are straight from the camera with only cropping done to it.

I wanted to achieve the reflected lights being more in line with the boat. I'll be honest and say I was really taking much notice if the water was moving, even if slightly. At the time it looked good to me LOL

The exif data on the 2nd one:

    TV mode
    Shutter: 4 seconds
    Aperture: F22.0
    ISO100
    Focal length: 31.0mm

I did try shooting some shots with a quicker sutter speed and they came out really crap (well to me they did). I dont know how to use PS yet to see if I can make it look a little more pleasing but then again to others it may look ok.

Hope I am not making a fool of myself here now - DOH!!

EDIT - I meant to say that the better size/res picture is on my flickr page

Sometinmes a photograph should not be "perfect" ...... I think that the 1st one is super. Why change it? (I certainly would not do too much with it at all!)

That said I really like what Fajitas has done - it kinda looks like it is CG'd.

Yeah I have to admit the first one is my favourite out of the batch & I agree, Fajita's attempt is inrtreresting indeed.

Fajitas!, how do you get that effect? Can you put a tutorial up in the darkroom?

Here's my poor attempt, thought since it was early morning, I'd bring up the yellow a bit, give it a warm kinda look, and upped the contrast, just a few basics..

First one is a fine pic

BTW What's with all the Xmas lights on the boat anyway ?

Boat visits Galway as often as it can and to make it a bit more interesting in the evenings they have the lights.

It was also the Galway Oyster Festival on so maybe they were making a bit of an effort - was nice though!!

Not a bad shot. Mike, you should try getting the boat at night during a high tide, as that's then the docks look their best:

I took that during the summer during the height of the heat wave, so there was no breeze.

Nice shot Fenster, love the black background as the emphasis is all on the wheelhouse & boat.

To get that effect was it done is PS?

Nice one - do you already have them done??

mike, i think the image is top notch out of the camera. As fajitias said, a little playing around in ps perks it up a bit, but it was good to start off with.

Thanks Dundhoone - appreciate yours and the other comments about the picture(s).

Yes I know, I was being anal about it (sniff sniff) but I honestly thought it could be better. Nobel Prize, here we come ......... hahahahaha

Thats an unsharp mask if ever I've seen one. Notice how the boat has gotten a bit of a halo? :)

Just a conversion to B&W and a straightening.

Ah yeah, but notice how long it took...

    Well... Like, 3 minutes.

And as for making it better the next time, whack the aperture open and drastically reduce the exposure from 4 seconds. See how that turns out.
