Was listening to Lyric FM earlier and they played live Brubeck doing Take Five (what else?!) and it got me thinking it was time I bought something by him.

    So anyone fancy naming names?

    Mike.

Get Time Out, that's the album with Take Five on it.
I'd be very surprised if you will be disappointed with this album, very easy to listen to, lovely tunes.

Agreed - absolute gem of an album

A few years back a friend of mine was doing his shopping in tesco and had a glance at the CD section (you know the type, supermarket albums like panpipe power ballads and Chris de Burg whistles Kenny G). Anyway he came across this album simply called Dave brubeck for 3 quid and bought it on impulse.

its just a recording of a Brubeck concert but wow! What a concet. brubeck is almost outshone by an absoloutely mind blowing fretless bass player. I probably couldn't find this album anywhere even if I wanted to (my friend lost the case) but yeah - cracker

Nice summary! :) and no I have'nt actually bought anything yet! His '63 live album is the one people rave about.

I saw him last year in Switzerland. He has still got it.. Amazing band too.

Brubeck Time is another good album, goes well with Time Out.

    My favorites are:

    Time Further Out - 1961
Countdown: Time in Outer Space -1962
    Time Changes - 1963
    and of course, Time Out.

Amazingly enough, those are also the ones I own (on original vinyl). I also have a Japanese concert album that I can't find on any list, where the record itself is made of red see-through plastic.

Paul Desmond was the sax player in the Brubeck group and his albums are worth seeking out as well.

the Essential Dave Brubeck is often around town pretty cheap.

Good example of Desmond away from the Brubeck group:

    I wouldn't recommend any Brubeck. I think he's rubbish.

    !wa

Just about every major Jazz legend has covered his work
Wes Montgomery - In your own sweet way, waht a great tune!
    Miles Davis
the list goes on and on
Louis Armstrong dueted with him in the sixties, as did Ella

If you mean he's rubbish because he's not Coltrane, then you simply haven't a clue what your talking about. I not his biggest fan but there is no doubting his contribution to Jazz.

I really don't like his stuff. Grand tricking around with time signatures, but it's just to cornbread for me. I don't care who's covered his stuff, there's loads of great stuff by musicians that haven't been covered, too. I just think it's boring, uninspiring rubbish.

After just doing a re-listen of Strange Meadowlark and Blue Rondo a la Turk, I'd have to say you've misspelled your name. Should be "Doodookopf". :)

When you're chilled out and relaxed there's not a lot of albums that are more apt than Time Out. Fair enough, the time sigs approach kind of became a bit of a gimic, but as for uninspiring - I urge you to listen to solo Brubeck's playing on the head to Meadowlark. Now imho that's pretty much the height of jazz piano delicacy and emotion.

    Take Five

A fast and non-standard version of the tune from 1961, with Desmond and Morello taking solos. Desmond pwnzzors!

    No Desmond indeed! -
    Paul Desmond (November 25, 1924 - May 30, 1977)

Interesting article on Desmond who had a legendary dry sense of humor:

    And who needs youtube? :D
