House infested with insects...

    Hi everyone,

Didn't know where else to post this...

Our family pet died a couple of months back. Since then, we have noticed tiny little black insects all over the house that bite. They also "hop" too, but they aren't fleas, as they have very noticeable wings, and fleas don't have wings. We have a small child in the house so as you can imagine we are eager to get rid of these things. They have bitten a couple of people (not me though) and just wondering if anyone knew of any way to get rid of them? Someone suggested cleaning all fabric surfaces with a steam cleaner - would this kill these things off?

Also, we were on a holiday to France recently and this has only started happening since we got back. The pet which died didn't even have fleas, so we don't even know where these little things have come from....

Sound sort of like ants to me, I was thinking fruit flies at first until you said that the bite.

If they are ants there are bait boxes available in most DIY/Garden centres (Nippon being the most noteable brand), these would be the best way to go especially with a small child around. Watch the insects movements closely and try to work out where they are coming from exactly. Then if you can locate a nest destroy it - if its outside the house a kette full of boiling water does the trick nicely.

    Hope this helps. Good luck.

(Mods - does this belong in the DIY forum ?)

Sounds like mosquitoes to me. Little f8ckers. I sustained 3 or 4 bites last week from the little bastards. Quite common as we've had such balmy weather. Burning citronella should help.

I dont think they are mosquitoes, they dont hop, i wonder if they are gnats?

If it is a severe infestation you could get the house fumigated.

Airing the house, washing bedding and cleaning may help, but the central heating will keep it warm and that may allow them to survive.

Perhaps a google image search will allow you to identify them.

    Fltpaper strips may help

This may be more suitable to the Gardening/DIY forum.

Have you brought any new potted plants into the house?
I've had this problem myself & it turned out that the compost in a plant I was given was the source of a similar infestation to what you describe.
