in that price range you'll may be limited to used cameras, and probably in some cases only the camera (no lenses)

    look on ebay/other for

    Nikon D50
    Nikon D70
    Canon 300D
    Canon 350D

all great cameras....I'd be leaning towards recomending the d50 tho..

Like I said ... be careful ... Nikon people generally reocmmend Nikon ... Canon people Canon ... do your own homework ...

eas is demonstrating the point with the outburst ... but to be fair I forgot to add to my original mesasage becasue I was trying to figure out how you display an image in line rather than as a link ... sorry if I upset you EAS it was unintended.

... I'd recommend the 350d/300d/400d ... myself ... especially if you intend to shoot at higher ISO's ...

leinsterman, my "outburst" was based on your origianl post that consisted of nothing but a Canon Logo. Not very helpful to the OP.

I could care less if someone bought a Canon or a Nikon, certainly don't feel as thou I belong to any religion based on the make of my camera. In fact, if I was to start over again right now I would buy a Canon 5D.

I recomended the D50 because within the budget quoted, IMO it's the best option for his money.
sorry if I upset you EAS it was unintended.

"Annoyed" would be a better word than upset.

    Eaz:

Im actually on my way to buy a D200, even know when the Fuji S5 have been announced, and the Sigma 17-35 F-2.8.
Im just wondering if you have any online album with photos that you have taken with your D200 :)

    hi cutepage

I'm not trying to be smart, but have you considered why you want/need a d200? Why not a D80 or 400D?

The reason why I ask this is because the quality of the pictures a D80 or 400D can take are more or less the same as or *arguably* better than the D200.

I think the reasons to pay extra for a D200 start beyond image quality, and these are generally features that most casual photographers would never need/use. I bought the D200 as an upgrade from a D70 for very specific things that it had over my D70. Now, Nikon have incorporated most of these features into the D80. Having said that, I would not trade my D200 for a D80. :)

Of course I have no idea of what camera best suits you,or how advanced a photographer you are, only making the point.

anyhow - about samples, I dont really have a showcase site or flickr account, meaning to set one up but never seem to get around to it. But I've stuck some recent'ish ones up here for you to look at.

The first bunch are from a project I'm currently working on, the people i'm doing it for havent even seen them yet.

The rest are random images I have put up here and other sites before....some of my son and daughter.

    you can see them here

anyhow, good luck with whatever camera you decide to buy, I can say the D200 is pretty sweet to use.

    Eaz,

you are right, no question about it that the D80 and 400D can take as good quality pics as the D200. No question #2 about it that the D80 is a great DSLR and will probably sell alot since its really close to the D200 but for less money.

Canon is out of the question already since I already have nikkor lenses and Sigma Fmount lenses. Maybe a stupid argument but it saves me some money to stay with Nikon in this case.

Why am I looking at the D200 over the D80?

For me a good reason is that it's a different body that feels better in my hand and also it's somewhat better weather sealed than the D80. Feels more realiable cause of the metal chassis... but thats just my own opinion.

I also like the idea to be able to set the ISO in full stops, to experiment with different ISO settings. D80 doesnt do this, it uses "normal" film ISO numbers.
separate ISO and WB button.. not essential but really really handy.

I could go on.. its those small details that keeps giving me ideas of what I could do with a D200 that is pushing me over the edge.

To be noted.. Im just a entusiast.. enter some competitions once in a while and I'm also into movie making.. so I like editing a lot =)

Currently Im a old school 35mm SLR user and only have a pocket digi.

And I know my self to well.. if I buy a D80.. the D200 will always be in the back of my head... also not a good reason.. but humans works in different ways.

I really like what you have done with your pictures.. the Kiwi picture is so eye cathing.. love the backlight looking for away to shine through!

Also.. portraits in BW cant be beaten.. it really extends the expression in the faces.. I am sure that the people you are working for will be really impressed!

Thanks again for sharing your photos =)

nah_biy!, go for the D50. It's about your price range and you'll be able to borrow your friend's Dad's lenses and accessories.

great stuff cutepape - you know exactly why you need a D200! :)
I already have nikkor lenses and Sigma Fmount lenses. Maybe a stupid argument but it saves me some money to stay with Nikon in this case.

not a stupid argument at all.
And I know my self to well.. if I buy a D80.. the D200 will always be in the back of my head... also not a good reason.. but humans works in different ways.

yep - I would be the same.

like I said, I wasnt trying to be smart or test you or anything - just making the points.

I'm in the same boat as you - enthusiast with pro-asperations (ha as if)

Anyhow, enjoy the camera when you get it. Are you tempted by the S5?

Well.. looking at your pictures I have to say to you are on a good path to pro!! Not easy to get those kind of photos =)

The S5.. I was stuned when I heard and saw the news about it. Looks like a D200 but does it act as one? Havent seen any pricing yet.. I know though that generally Fuji has pretty good image sensors.. but.. hmm.. Nikon is Nikon.. just as Canon is Canon.. they've been in the game for a long time.. how about the S series?

Why? the D50 is cheaper €580 vs €900 and arguably (from I've heard and read) the kit lense it comes with is better. The pixel count won't make a different to someone starting out.
