Im starting a website for Irish photobloggers with the hope that different photographers will submit photos on a daily basis of images around Ireland .

each image will include a link back to your site or flickr and some detail about yourself if thats what you want.

The idea behind it is to form a network of Irish photo bloggers so that photographers and display their work and any standard is welcome .

If their are any photo bloggers interested please email photographers@msn.com

thank you for taking the time to read this

I would be interested to know where the copyright law is on this!

    Anyone know?

    S

the photographer retains copyright it not about stealing its about building a group of photoblogs that are irish in nature besides you can watermark your work, if you are fearful or better still join and see.

if you want to move this away from blogspot *shudder* I'd be happy to host it on my server.

    Either way, I'm interested.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,259 ✭✭✭Shiny

I have expressed my interest to the guy also.

I also recommended to him that blogspot isn't
the best idea mainly due to the fact that after
the last say 10 posts, everything is "archived"
and is really hard to find after that.

Slumped it's not about being good enough it s all just about owning a camera and having a desire to press the shutter , but the up take is going well I think it's up to 8/9 people still looking for more for those who have mailed me when you send a pic and its posted which they all will be your link is then added to main page, by the way thank you to the mods of this board for allowing this thread to run I think it will be really good to have a network of irish bloggers ( photo) helping to promote irish photography on the net and all in one place

attempted to start up something like this, albeit in a slighty different format about a year ago. Long story short, never bothered seeing it through due to other projects and put it on the backburner. It'll be good to see a collaborative project such as this getting off the ground. Do keep us updated as things progress pixel.

I know this is probably as thick as it gets but do I need a blog or will a mere Flickr a/c do?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18 pixel 41

A mere flickr will lol more people are using it now for their main site to store their photos. rymus have you sent an email and joined ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,742 ✭✭✭✭thebaz

    i had problems accessing
    http://irishbloggers.my-expressions.com/

Can you detail or give a link to a readme of what to do , i.e. when to send in photo, do you accept only one photo a month, basically what to do to get photo added to blog , and what we need to join/ log into -- and when we can start submitting photos -- currently a bit confused .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 629 ✭✭✭cotton

I'd like to it too but as I'm setting up a pet photography business, most of my images will be of animals & I don't know if that's what you're looking for?

Is it OK to pimp the address of the site at this stage in my signature??

Baz the link you posted worked here and the ones above have worked maybe it was down when you tried as I had to pick another template because for some reason the comments where not showing on the first template

    Slumped pimp away .
cotton every one is welcome if you still have trouble Baz email me

ok Baz you can send in photos as you wish , but to be fair on others they will join a Q you cant access the main blog you email the pics to me at photographers@msn.com the main idea behind it is to gather irish photo bloggers in one place so as to build a community of photographers you are included in our photographer links on the main page which links back to your own site thus building traffic for your on photoblog there is also a info blog at www.irishbloggers.blog-city.com.
and if you join the mailing list that would be great as it deals with info and updates
It really is a simple idea that I hope will work also I have in mind to approach people in the hope of having an display of the photos contained on the site, but that will be when it is fully working and working well , but that is the direction Im thinking but these things tkae time I hope that is more clear for you if you still have trouble just email me

    I'd be interested.

But I'd like to know what are the plans for the future of the site or have you thought that far ahead ?

e.g. do you see any commercial angles either for yourself or the bloggers ... or is it just a for the fun and the art of the thing ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

Would it be correct to speculate that once the site becomes very popular, emailing the photos to you to submit manually will become a very unwelcome workload?

I can only imagine the kind of pain in the ass that would be.

the simple answer would be no. its about getting people to use their camera with a purpose in mind helping each other to improve as photographers by commenting on the displayed photos on the site and creating a place for irish photographers (bloggers ) to show their work and of course there is the fun aspect to it also thats it for now in my mind.

but how you use the site is up to your self when we link back to your site you can do what you like with the traffic you get .

But I think anyone purly using it for commercial reasons would have missed the point of the photo blog hope this clears up some of your thoughts .

Ihave had an offer of help which i will be taking up when I get back in touch with him and your right it has been busy this last 2 days but also i think this is the busy time once it is set up I expect it to run smooth as only one a day will be posted thats the hope anyway Pixel

I presume an upload facility will become available soon on the site ?
In the meantime i sent my photo using picasa , apparently it compresses the jpeg as well , havnt used it before for email.
Pixel - Any issues with attachment let me know .
    Cheers.

Thats what I was getting at in a kind of round about way. Many hands make light work and all that jazz.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18 pixel 41

I guess in time it would be possible for all who take part be able to upload their own photos all that would require is a sharing of the pass word and login details.
but thinking of it briefly that would require photogaphers uploading on a specfic day and time and sticking to it strongly rather than sending a photo when they wanted. the upside of it of course is that it would stop me from doing all the work. which would be welcome
I think it would be better to include a team of 5 for t he present time
as there is an element of trust required as the pass word and login details are easily changed.
and maybe that group could meet and discuss how things move along im open to different ways of doing things as my desire is only to gather people together who are really into photobloggin if you are interested please email me at my email photographers@msn.com and we will discuss it in more detail and please only those who are willing to give up time and great effort to make the site a huge success

Regarding passwords.. if you used Wordpress each contributor would have their own username and password. They could then add photos which would enter as drafts, leaving an admin to decide what gets published and when.

Sharing one password between a group of >20 people is not only impractical, it's madness. Also wordpress (and many other blogging apps) will allow you to email directly to the website and have the email formatted into a blog post.

Best thing now would be to have a properly structured archive system filtering not only by date and category but by photographer also... If you start right from the beginning, it'll cut out all the cleaning up you'll have to do when you move to a more powerful and fully featured system (i.e. as I've said above; Wordpress). I'm not pontificating, just being practical :)

Its this kind of practical advice that people need to make a world a better place (I stole that last bit from a great commercial)

I'm not so familair with wordpress ... but as an alternative suggestion is to set up an FTP server or equivalent with an appropraite sub directory structure ... or use a gmail account ... there are plug-in's for the likes of firefox that enable gmail to be used like storage space ... and if you start to run out of space ... then you just invite yourself to open another account ...

... you could then write a script to automate the upload process ... but this would require the contributors to be disciplined about file naming etc ...

anyways ... I sent you a mail if you are still short of the magic 25 ... will you be taking up my suggestion to host Q&A a web conference between the photographers once the selection is made ?

I'd still like to know what your plans for it are ... I am getting the impression is is purely for art's sake ... which is great in my book ...

the idea is staying in its present format and on its present server and anyone interested in helping can email thanks for all your input so I will be just getting down to running so any one looking for info read the above posts and you know now how to contact me

Um, what exactly do you think we are doing here :):)

ps: no problem with the sig provided its not going commercial.... though I dunno why you would want to take on all that work...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,584 ✭✭✭leinsterman

I don't know. I contacted the email address and received no response. Not even a "thanks for you interest ... but we are full ... "

I am a bit suspicious of this thread ... I never really got any answer to queries about the longer term objectives of the idea etc. ... and I got a distinct feeling that the reponse below my last post in the thread was a tad on the snotty side ...

I am now helping Pixel with this as its already been mentioned that it is way too much for one person to do on his own. Its also my fault for not letting people know but having to have the old typey machiney thingy rebuilt its taken a little while to deal with stuff.

I can be sent pictures for those interested in having their pics added to mike_anywhere@yahoo.co.uk. I need full name (not necessary passport specific), picture obviously which is no bigger than 600 pixels wide or long and a link to a web site where other work is being held for peeps to go and visit.

    Thanks

    Mike

My guess would be; Because it seemed like a good idea at the time but the logistics weren't workable. Hard to keep a blog freshly updated with one author and 15+ contributors.

I havent ehard from him in a few days but if you want pictures posting then I can help. Just email them to mike_anywhere@yahoo.co.uk with picture name, description if you want one, your name and a url for your work. Remember the pics have to be a maximum of 600 pixels max either wide or long.

I've enough trouble trying to keep my own blog updated without providing content to another one :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,219 ✭✭✭Calina

In theory I like the idea of an Irish Photoblogs site but I do think the way this one was organised was a little onerous perhaps. Maybe using some kind of an aggregator from the existing Irish photoblogs might have been an easier way to do it.

That being said, I'm not currently volunteering to do it...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,764 ✭✭✭Valentia

In this case it's just adding a picture a day. No rambling and raving like other blogs ;) Mike it's ok. Just trying to stir it up a bit. :p

That's exactly what I was working on some time ago... Turns out its not as easy to work with images as it is with text :( If I had an iota of will power I'd probably have gotten it working

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,219 ✭✭✭Calina

Not an easier way to do it then... :-) Drat. I was hoping it would be the work of an evening. How naive.

Maybe I'll think about this some more if I can find time.

Mmmm... uploading one pic per month, doesn't sound like something that will take off to me!!

    T.
