Weird XP Pro Svc PK 2 Issue

    Hi,

I have a PC running the above OS, and it is showing some weird issues.

When working on a word document and I right click in the page to get the options list, the menu pops up, but alot of the options are missing. Not 'greyed-out', just missing. Also, the box is still the same size, just occupied by white space.
Similarly on the start menu, there are items mnissing, and in some cases, the icon is there and the text is missing.
Rebooting resolves for a time, but not permanently.

Any Ideas? I am almost certain it is virus free. And it is only running Office XP and AutoCAD lite.

    Thanks.

Have you tried detect and repair from the help menu in word?

    Nope, but will do.
However, the problem exists outside Word, it is on the Start menu of the OS aswell?

    Cheers.

Can you take a screenshot of it with Winsnap (freeware) to get a visual look at the problem.

It's definitely not the auto hide unused features/programs feature at work though if that were somehow damaged it would be a possible source of the problem.

Just to be safe do a full system scan with Windows Defender as well to rule out any spyware.

Graphics card/driver problem? Just a thought.

    Okay,

Ran the detect & Repair, it did its thing sucessfully.
Also, tried to download defender, but keep getting errors when I go to run. (I saved it, and I ran it directly, neither worked).
So, I am currently running a full scan on the machine and see what that throws up.

I will post screen shot when the issue re-occurs.

    Thanks.

My best guess as to why Windows Defender wouldn't install is that you may not have the Windows Installer 3.1 installed which is a requirement, you could give that a spin and see if anything changes.
