I'm 18, and wanna join a camera club, but all the ones in Tallaght, or any ive heard about seem to have an older group

Are there any clubs with more people around my age group, or should I just join a club and accept that everyones a good bit older than me???

Try some of the colleges, usually they'll be students so they'll be your age.

There is an advantage to having the old fogies (sp) in a club for their camera experience

    I'm in the same boat...

I want to join Dublin Camera Club when i get my new
camera but I have never seen anyone here mention
that they are a member etc...

I'm also curious as to what is discussed in the meetings
    every week ??

I never had a forum like this with local people when I lived in Glasgow, so I joined a camera club there. From week to week, there were talks by people (photographers/hobbyists/serious amateurs) who had maybe done interesting trips which they had a sort of photo diary for (Himalayas, Norwegian wilderness) and they would talk through a slideshow. That tended to be quite interesting although always tended to be more about the subject than the actual photography, and osmetimes it was a little bit 'look at me I'm so good, aren't I?'... but anyway - apart from that there was a huge amount of competition judging and showing of winners etc. In fact, competition activity would take up I'd say 75% of the content of the meetings, and the rest was the aforementioned slideshows, with the odd raffle/auction to raise money. There were some obvious groups - I won't say I have a problem with sharing the company of men over 45-50 - and also some women of course - but it was very difficult to approach them as a group, and I only ever got talking to one or two blokes in particular. There were digital workshops, which I never made it to unfortunately but I did get to book a session on the scanner and got some great ps tips from the guy who looked after the IT stuff.

So, overall, I can't say I'd hurry to join another club, but I'd love to hear that there's one in Dublin that has a different approach. I think an ideal season would include an open session with a few professionals where you could submit some shots for critique, or ask them questions... a photoshop tutorial or two (this could apply to people scanning slides/prints as well so not excluding the film users)... a bring & buy of prints... those slideshows but with more content about the actual photography... and, of course, competition stuff too.

Are there any other club members who can say they get to do different things apart from the competitions and slideshows?

    Thanks elven,

one of the main attractions for me to the Dub Camera Club
is access to their little photo studio.

90€ for the year is much better than than 40€ per hour in
    other places in Dublin.:)

I've been a guest at meetings of various camera clubs both in Netherlands and here and they all pretty much suffer from what Elven described, which is why I've never actually joined one.

Not a bad idea Roen ;) perhaps regular photo meets / field trips and a monthly / fortnightly evening in a booked room somewhere for discussion / workshops / beers after. All boards members welcome afcourse :)

I'm starting a micro$oft bootcamp course next week and will be swamped until x-mas, but I'd be happy to get stuck into organising something like the above if anyone is interested.

You can go up to the Dublin Camera Club most Tuesdays at 8 for a look, if anyone asks just tell them you're interested in joining and you just want to see what it's like. It can be pretty interesting sometimes.

I agree with you on the age thing, I'm 28 and I feel like a young 'un! I really only joined for the studio/darkroom too, I wouldn't be the most active of members...

Down here it tends to be...

    - informed about various exibitions/competitions coming up
    - "nightly competition" (essentially submit photo's for critique)
    - break to walk around and have a good look at the submitted photos
    - possibly members work slideshow
    - small workshop on some aspect of photography, be it using photoshop, or talking about lighting or whatever.

    - And every 4-6 weeks or so there is a themed competition which you enter a 3 shot panel for. Winner chooses next theme.
