looking to get one of these for the parents as a christmas pressy.
anyone recommend a repuitable and reasonable priced one.

it doesnt need super features, but if it could be used in different cars easily enough and was simple to use that would be good.

    thanks

    http://www.pixmania.com/ie/uk/322094/art/airis/gps-navigator-t920ef-euro.html

Have this myself. Has the latest maps of Ireland and europe. The best you can get, at a great price.

    that looks great,
ive never heard of the brand, are they reputable in GPS?

do you find it easy to use / follow?

    thanks for the help

As good as any GPS brand. A spanish company I believe. No different than Garmin and the like. They just make the hardware, the maps are by route 66/NavTeq - one of the best in the business.

Extremely simple to use, great quality touch screen, anti glare, stylus, car charger, car holder, the works. Map software is very easy, simply type in where you want to go, or click it on the map. Has lots of options, it can avoid toll bridges and motorways and lots of other things. Voice commands aswell.

    Can't fault it!

    brilliant!

ill probably order it this week so that pixmania can get it to me in time for christmas ;)

I'll second what Ruu is sdaying, OP if you get one please update us, was thinking of getting GPS for my car and if this is the right price and quality it could be a winner!!

Anyone know what Irish coverage is like?
For example if I wanted to drive from Dublin to Cork could one of these guide me there?

as mentioned, it will be a pressie for the parents,
so feedback will be sometime after christmas ;)

I bought this from a different page for more money, but still feel I'm getting good value out of it:
    http://www.mysatnav.ie/
This was the only one they were recommending with Q2 maps, most up to date presently. There are some Garmin GPS on the site which claim to have a free update in 2007, but cost about €80 more. The guys in the motors forum seemed happy with this model too.

Elessar, whats the difference between the one you linked to - the T920EF, and the T920E for €333 - I can't see any ....

Some update on the ease of use, never needed the manual. Everything is nicely laid out, and took it for a test up many backroads in north county Dublin, found every one. Had a trip down to Limerick last week, and it directed me right into the car park of the shopping centre I was looking for. Chosen routes show up in purple, major turns and roundabout exits highlight in green, and the voice tells you which exit to take. Handy favourites list including home and the office.

I just got the T920 from Pixmania and it's a great little unit, and the maps are very good for Ireland from what I've seen so far. To be honest, for the price Pixmania are charging, it's a steal (and no, I don't work for Pixmania!)

How do vendors handle GPS mapping updates? How much could I expect to pay for next year's updated map showing all the new Dublin housing estates?

Lots of details on the Airis on this thread, am tempted to get one myself :)

thats great , please post some info if you get it as I was just about to get the AA one for 340 euro .

just to double check the above pixmania unit does it have the exact same maps as the AA one ie.. 100%.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 586 ✭✭✭The_g-man

That looks like the thread I saw before buying from mysatnav, lots of unhappy pixmania customers and maps aren't loaded on. Not worth the hassle, this arrived with maps pre-loaded, just pop the card in, turn it on and away you go.;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,451 ✭✭✭blastman

If you have a card reader, there's no hassle loading the maps. I also had no problem with Pixmania. Better to have the hundred-odd Euro in my pocket. ;)

This link is helpful BUT just be aware that the latest maps from Navteq are MORE detailed. This mapquest link is old Q1 2006 maps. the latest offering from Navteq is Q2...so you will be getting even better than this link shows.

    For example....

    From Mapquest link: NO bypass

    Picture1-1.png

From Airis using Navteq ( Q2 2006 ) YES bypass

seems most of the problems on that thread were with dhl/airis,
    not the vendor.

dont see why youd be happy paying a hundred euro more....

So to summarise... the Pixmania-linked Aris T920EF comes with v good Irish maps, no probs you can see and can be updated easy enough through use of a card reader?

Thinking of getting one but a friend said might be probs with updated maps etc because companies lock down there software so you need to get off them. Said to go for a big company brand, is the updated maps going to be a prob???

Route 66/Navteq is one of the biggest of mapping software crowds, I don't see updates being a problem from them.

this unit seems to be a good deal only problems people have are with lost deliveries or missing contents....
€258 seems like nothing for the peice of kit that you get.
    One quick question (in laymans)-

Say i buy this unit today gets delivered no probs with as said on the second thread Q2 2006 maps. In 2007 when the maps are uppdated i can pay €50(approx) to get the updates?
also can i continue to use Q2 2006 maps without having to pay?

1.once you have Q2 maps you can continue to use them without paying.
2.regarding updates, this can work a number of ways. you can buy direct from navteq ( can be expensive ) or go back to where you bought the unit.

As far as i know (but open to correction ) Pix do not sell map updates. to be honest Q2 is very detailed and will be fine for years to come unless you do a lot of driving to unknown places.

Yeah exactly what I think as well, my time isn't so vital that I'd pay €100 to have someone load maps off a cd onto an SD card for me.

Decided to go for one of these myself, getting a friend of mine to order it through his company to avoid the VAT, so assuming all goes well with the order & the delivery (not guaranteed based what I read on the other thread) should have it next week sometime.

Well mine left France on Friday evening and is currently in DHL's facility in East Midlands - UK, so I'm expecting delivery tomorrow morning :)

Ordered at the w/end, it arrived yesterday. The SD Card had the French map loaded so just ran the Route 66 s/w which prompted me which map I wanted to load. Took a few minutes to activate it for the unit & all worked fine then. Haven't really had much change to try it out as yet but turning it on in my back yard worked fine.

The dvd is the following Route 66 product for anyone who's interested.

Is this any good outside of car usage?
Could you use it hill walking for example in the the Wicklow Mountains or do the maps only cover roads?
Also is there any altitude function on them ?

There is an altitude indicator on it, yes. No sure how good it is when you go off-road, but it does give your exact position all the time, so you could probably work out from a sufficiently-detailed ordnance survey map where you are.

Longfield, you may be glad to know that with a little tweaking you can reveal the operating system which lies underneath. Then you can install a third party software package similar to what garmin have. This will allow you to "trek " offroad and give you altitude, Lat and long coordinates and terrain contours etc...

The downside is, i cant remember its name or where i saw it. I try to find it for you when i get home.

Don't know if it helps, I picked up a Garmin sat nav for my car at carphone warehouse for 199, works well so far, really happy with it.

Does anyone know anything about updating maps, is it expensive?
