The Sporting Emporium and under 21's....

It is clear from the boards 200 game thread that there is ALOT of 18-21 year old card players who will be denied the opportunity to play this game as well as many other SE events. I sent an email to approx 100 students asking them if they wanted toplay a qualifier for this 200 game and i several replies from people saying yes they would love to play but for the fact the venue is over 21's only. Surely the SE must recognise that they are missing out on customers because of this. Is that rule there to keep up the profile of the venue, do they believe that 18year old poker players will somehow lower teh character of the place?

    Additionally...
    • Surely if a 19 year old qualified online for the 3k Full Tilt game they have in november he would be allowed into the venue, so why not allow 18-21 year olds for specific games like the end of month 200 game?
    • Is it, in fact, legal to refuse entry to someone based on their age assuming that the person is of sufficient age to engage in the activities that take place within the venue? i.e Gambling!?

any thoughts or comments would be appreciated as alot of the members of DIT Poker Soc and alot of 18-21 year old card players are being denied the opportunity to play cards in arguably the best venue in Dublin.

I think the only answer to this is 'tough'. It is a private members club and they can do what they want in that respect. As for the Full Tilt thing, I think you should read the T's & C's and it will mention that the qualifier has to be a member of the club or will forfeit the entry.

I haven't read them, but I can imagine they say either that or an equivalent answer.

No, how mant nightclubs say the same.

Once the same rule applies to all then they are perfectly entitled to it. As said, nightclubs operate under the same rules in some cases. It's legal for 18+ to drink alcohol and dance;) but some nightclubs have a 21+, 25+ etc policy.

If they were to allow one person under 21 into the venue then the same rule would have to apply to everybody or else they are being descriminated against. Again, this applies to everywhere. If a nightclub says "not tonight lads, over 21's only" and you have a friend who's 19 in there, then what they are doing is against the law. The same also applies if you go up to a nightclub with runners on and they say no runners and you see somebody in the smoking area in runners, they are breaking the law again.

Same rule must apply to everybody, and if it does, they are well within their rights to refuse service.

i figure with nightclubs doing it its the same as the odeon which is 23s but i dont want to go there anyway.

although i do like the emporium so if the odeon is that good i want in! i do enjoy the faact that i dont have to listen to shoutman and his bad beats in the emporium.

Cormie has the law spot on. Working in a nightclub myself i see this questioned all the time but as he said if a place says its over 25 example as long as there is not one person under 25 in there its perfectly legal.

i said from day one that it should have been held in the fitz.... luckily enough i turned 21 in the summer but id be very annoyed was this not the case. its very annoying when you 18 to be refused entry into anywhere, D2s over 19s rule is one of the worst policies ever made.

I know for a fact that there are several members of the SE who are not 21 but became members before this rule was implimented etc..

Surely it would be better to hold this tournament in Fitz or Jackpot in future so all the 18-21's can play, seems like a good few players are missing out because of it.

I personally disagree with this. The SE are making great efforts to accomodate us next Saturday. They have shown a real willingness to negotiate with the players over structure etc. and have indicated that they will change anything about the tournament structure, prizepool payout etc. that we don't like after the weekend.

Moreover, I think that Jeff is over - exaggerating the amount of under 21 players that would play this event on a monthly basis. There are clearly a couple of good players that will miss out, but I don't think that we are talking about anymore than 5 - 10 players who would be potential regulars over the long haul. For me, the loss of those 5 or so players must be weighed against the fact that we have a club willing to run this slow structure tourney in a way we want - for a reasonable buy - in.

One only needs to look at the laughable structure of the €270 EOM (Crapshoot City) game in the Fitz to see that they probably wouldn't be interested in accomodating such an extended structure for a €220 freezeout.

    Totally agree Lloyd.

This is only my opinion mind - I could be wrong...
You are incorrect on this. I had asked Luke the day before Ian posted up that the SE were going to hold this, and he said he would have no problem with hosting it as long as we could guarantee 15 players. I had explained that we wanted a deep stacked, longer blind tourney and he was all in favour.

The fact that the EOM is on a Thursday necessitates a faster structure, also due to the fact that they almost always get 100+ runners.

I can't believe this post has gone so far off topic....

I am flabbergasted that so many 18-21 year olds are moaning that they can't sit down, not drink (!) and play cards with embittered elder members of the same sex on a Saturday night...when they should be out chasing women, taking drugs and drinking themselves senseless!!

what are the young people coming to....in my day etc, etc...and so forth

    I blame the parents!!
