    Hi All,

I have a new laptop and BB connection. I have never used VoIP, skype. What methods can I use to make calls? How much will it cost or what equipment will I need? Can I make calls to mobiles or only landlines?

Would really appreciate it if someone could explain my options in layman's terms.

    Thanks very much!

Who is your broadband provider? Some of them are not particulary useful for VoIP.
What methods can I use to make calls?
You can use any one of a number of standards based VoIP providers, or you can use a proprietary service like Skype or MSN. For free calls to european telephones, stick with standards based VoIP providers. The simplest ones to try are voipcheap.com / voipbuster.com / voipstunt.com (all slightly different packages from the same company). You don't even need a microphone to use these services, if you have a landline, as you can set up a "call back" from your number to the VoIP service, and then a call from the VoIP service to the number you want to call.
How much will it cost or what equipment will I need?
You need to put €11.60 credit into a voipcheap.com account (300 minutes of free calls per week). If you're only calling US numbers, you might even be able to get Skype-Out for free, but you won't be able to call non-US numbers for free. You'll also need a microphone-headset - while you can use the microphone and speakers built into your laptop, the people you call will probably hear feedback on the connection.
Can I make calls to mobiles or only landlines?
You can't call GSM (pretty much everyone except the US) mobiles for free. You can get rates as low as 9c/minute, though. There's no such thing as a "mobile number" in the US - they're all treated the same from the callers point of view, it's the owner of the phone who pays the premium for receiving mobile calls.

I have DigiWeb Metro. I don't have a landline. I will primarily be calling ROI landlines. Can you make skype - skype calls for free?

You can make PC to PC calls for free using any one of a couple of dozen applications, including skype.

Skype will not give you free calls to Irish landlines. Stick with a standards based VoIP applicaton for free cals to Irish landlines.
