    Isn't this a cool idea:

"The lights are going out in Iceland this week so people can gaze at the night sky. Authorities in the capital Reykjavik will turn off street lights on Thursday evening and people are also being encouraged to sit in their houses in the dark."

That sounds pretty cool. I doubt something like that would happen in Dublin or Cork or wherever, there would be looting and rioting rather than star-gazing lol

A very fair point which could be explored in a different forum.

Much of the light produced from street lights is projected upwards. This is, of course, a waste of energy and destroys the night sky.

An Taisce have a policy statement on light polution. Also there’s an interesting site onhttp://www.irishastronomy.org/ilpac/

A dark night sky is of course an ecomomic asset we must protect. Plus its mental.
