What make would be regarded as a really decent printer to print onto photo paper or is it a case that if you want to get a real decent job that you send them off??

No "make" determines the quality. Quality would vary from model to model.
How often & much would you print? B&W or colour, or both?

I suppose the qty is the million dollar question but it helps having a printer that does B&W in B&W rather than grey & white for example. It would also include colour.

I use an Epson R200 and Ilford Gallerie smooth pearl paper for all my prints now and it is excellent. I sell on this paper too.

It's cheap as chips, but it just keeps churning out great looking pictures. I only use original ink and its about €60 for all six cartridges but its worth it. I did 50 A4 pictures on it at a polo tournament in one day. Not a bother to it.
