ActiveX and Flash

Right, I've heard that ActiveX is needed to work certain web applications but that it can also allow other internet users to access your computer, is that correct?

Also, is ActiveX necessary to use Flash, or can you use Flash without ActiveX?
I went to download the Adobe Flash player and was prompted to install ActiveX first. After installing the Flash player, I'd like to uninstall ActiveX again, but it is not listed in Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel. Is it included in the Flash application or can I remove it without removing Flash?

    Cheers in advance.
    Jim

    Not really,

Active-X & Microsoft's revisions of it up till the version that ships in IE 6 XP SP2 and IE7 had very little in the way of security safeguards which is how IE in part got it's bad reputation (plus the fact that Active-X/IE was tied into the OS made things worse).

Just for comparison Firefox has something called XPCOM which is very similar in functionality but was built with security safeguards in mind from the start.

Anyway active-x is used for the plugin architecture which is why flash requested that it be installed, as long as you are using IE6 SP2 or IE7 you should be fine there is no need to remove active-x as long as you practice sceptical computing e.g. don't install anything without you having initiated it.
